Your Voice Matters, Especially in a Primary

Civic participation doesn’t begin and end with the November election. Primary elections are an important part of our democratic process because they help determine which candidates will ultimately appear on the general election ballot.

Elections can have very concrete consequences for the working class.

At the state level, elected officials can influence or determine things such as:
• Labor and collective-bargaining laws
• Prevailing wage and public construction
• Workplace safety
• Pay and benefits
• Pensions and retirement
• Unemployment insurance and workers' compensation
• Public infrastructure.. and so much more.

A lot of consequential labor policy isn't decided in presidential elections. State representatives, state senators, governors, executive councilors, members of Congress and other elected officials can all participate in decisions that eventually reach a worker's paycheck, jobsite, health plan, pension or training program.

Please research the best candidates that stand behind the working class and GO VOTE for them on Tuesday, September 8th at your local polling location.

⚡ Turning yesterday's landfill into tomorrow's energy.

IBEW Local 490 members, working with our signatory contractor E.S. Boulos, are proud to be powering a new solar field on a closed landfill in Concord, New Hampshire. This project will feature approximately 11,000 solar panels, transforming underutilized land into a source of clean, renewable energy for the community.

Through net metering, the energy produced will benefit the Concord School District, the City of Concord, Concord Housing, and State of New Hampshire offices, demonstrating how smart investments in infrastructure can strengthen public services while creating good-paying union jobs.

Projects like this showcase what IBEW electricians do every day: delivering safe, reliable, high-quality electrical work that powers our communities and supports New Hampshire's energy future.

We're proud of our members for bringing their skill, professionalism, and craftsmanship to another project that will serve Concord for years to come.

☀️ Heat doesn't care how experienced you are.

When temperatures climb, the risk of heat illness climbs with them. Every construction worker, from first-year apprentices to seasoned journeymen, is at risk.

🔸 Drink water before you're thirsty. Staying hydrated means drinking water even at times when you are not at work: evenings, before work, etc.
🔸 Take breaks in the shade or a cool area.
🔸 Wear lightweight, breathable clothing when possible.
🔸 Know the warning signs: dizziness, headache, nausea, confusion, excessive sweating—or no sweating at all.
🔸 Watch out for your brothers and sisters on the job. If someone seems "off," speak up.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately if a worker becomes confused, loses consciousness, or has a high body temperature.

No deadline, schedule, or paycheck is worth risking your life. Looking out for each other is what union solidarity is all about.

Stay hydrated. Stay alert. Stay alive. 💪🚧

June is Men's Mental Health Awareness Month.

In the construction industry, we're taught to push through. Work tired. Work sore. Work stressed. Take care of the job and take care of the crew.

But too many brothers are carrying more than tools and equipment. They're carrying stress, anxiety, depression, financial pressure, family struggles, and the weight of feeling like they have to handle it all alone.

Strength isn't staying silent.

Strength is checking in on your brothers.
Strength is asking for help when you need it.
Strength is speaking up before things become overwhelming.

As electricians, we look out for each other on the jobsite every day. Let's do the same when it comes to mental health.

If you're struggling, talk to someone. Your family needs you. Your crew needs you. You matter.

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States and honors the long struggle for freedom, dignity, and equal opportunity.
As union members, we recognize that the fight for economic justice and workplace equality is ongoing.
Juneteenth reminds us that progress is achieved when people stand together, organize, and refuse to accept injustice.

Today, we honor the resilience, contributions, and sacrifices of Black Americans who helped build our nation and strengthened the labor movement.

We recommit ourselves to the principles of solidarity, equality, and opportunity for all.

An injury to one is an injury to all.

It’s Never Too Late to Start a Trade
One of the biggest myths out there is that apprenticeships are only for 18-year-olds. They’re not.
People start trade careers in their 30s, 40s, and even 50s. Some are changing careers. Some are raising kids. Some are looking for better pay, benefits, and a future they can be proud of.
Is it easy? No.
Working full time, attending classes at night, and still being present for your family requires sacrifice. There will be long days and tired evenings. But thousands of apprentices prove every year that it can be done.
You don’t have to put your life on hold to build a better one.
Your children don’t need to see perfection. They need to see determination. They need to see what it looks like when Mom or Dad invests in themselves, keeps their promises, and refuses to settle.
An apprenticeship isn’t just about learning a trade. It’s about building a career, earning while you learn, providing for your family, and creating opportunities that can last a lifetime.
So if you’ve ever thought:
“Am I too old?”
“Can I do this with kids?”
“Can I work and go to school?”
The answer is yes.
Your timeline doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.
It’s never too late to bet on yourself.
⚡ The best time to start was years ago. The second-best time is today.
