We all love the dragons, the pumpkins, pirate ships, and giants, but it’s the fog bubbles that always steel the show!

The John Ball Zoo Lantern Festival is SO speaking my language this year! The entire first half of the back of the park is Enchanted Forest themed! I gasped! Dragons, unicorns, fairies, and other magical creatures! Plus so many giant, colorful mushrooms! It was breathtaking! My son and I stayed until they closed, just taking it all in! 🐉🍄🦄

Alice in Wonderland (with Dragons!)

Alice in Wonderland is my favorite story, and it’s also one of my favorite scenes in Storybook Hollow. It’s also no coincidence that Twigg, who just happens to be a dragon covered in mushrooms, is hiding right around the corner!

Pumpkin dragon progress is temporarily on hold while I work on ballet props, but in the meantime, I’ve been pondering how much of our existing pumpkin kingdom should join him at ArtPrize.

Squashington and Gourdelia, our pumpkin king and queen, for sure. Maybe the pumpkin villagers? Maybe even the singing pumpkins? If so, they’ll probably all need to get spruced up a bit with some new clothes and details… I could have way too much fun with this! 🎃

Who would you like to see join our pumpkin dragon at ArtPrize?

I’ve had so much fun building these dragons! Each one brought its own challenges and taught me something new. I can’t wait to add the pumpkin dragon to the family, and have many more bouncing around in my brain waiting to come out!

May is lovely and all, but I do miss October!

Still thinking back on Halloween 2025 and what an incredible season it was. I’m so grateful for the community, the support, and every bit of Halloween magic!

I inadvertently created a cat fort!

I have the pumpkin dragon’s head up on foam blocks for structural work, and Merlin decided this was the greatest thing I’ve ever done for him personally.

Time to start carving the Pumpkin Dragon’s body!

But first…

I had to bring these blocks inside to carve. They’d been stacked up outside for a year and I didn’t want to bring any bugs in the house. So Felix offered to shake them up for me a bit.

For what it’s worth, I don’t really think there were actually any bugs on them in the first place.

(Also, the trampoline is still being set up for the summer and the safety net will go on this weekend.)

Let’s make pumpkin guts!

Many of you have suggested adding pumpkin guts and seeds in the dragon’s mouth, so I’ve decided to go for it!

I’m using orange stretchy spider web as the base and coating it with DAP Dynaflex caulk tinted with orange latex paint.

It’s messy but fun! I’ve got more ideas to play around with for this, so stay tuned!

The pumpkin dragon is really starting to come to life!

Last night, I finally got to test out his lighting. I love how the warm candle-like effect feels like the glow of a Jack-o-Lantern.

I hate to jinx myself, but the next few steps should go pretty quickly, so I hope to have some exciting updates soon!
