FYI from Comptche Broadband Committee!
September 27, 2020
Dear Comptche Community Members,
In response to AT&T’s planned abandonment of DSL internet service to Comptche in 2021, we have reactivated the all-volunteer Comptche Broadband Committee (CBC).
For the past several months, the CBC has been working to bring reliable internet access to our community and possibly surrounding areas. We have become an unincorporated non-profit association in order to represent our community to State and Federal agencies. We received a $5,000 grant from the Comptche Community Organization to retain the services of Rachelle Chong, an attorney who was previously the CA Public Utilities Commissioner who was instrumental in bringing DSL to our community in 2009.
Rachelle arranged for a few of us to meet with PUC Commissioner Martha Guzman Aceves and key PUC staff, and we have developed a strategy from that meeting:
We will petition the PUC to compel AT&T to continue to support DSL in Comptche. Our attorney Rachelle feels we are in a good position there vs. AT&T.
We are exploring alternatives to AT&T. Rachelle has contacted two possible Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and the CBC is evaluating these options. For now, the GeoLinks ISP seems the most promising.
GeoLinks is considering offering voice and internet services to customers within the Comptche service area. All voice rate plans offered by GeoLinks include unlimited local and long-distance calling. The broadband plans offered by GeoLinks will provide minimum speeds of 10 Mbps download with no monthly usage caps. Prices for these services are still being determined as GeoLinks develops a network plan for Comptche.
In order for any ISP to be interested in serving us, it is vital that we indicate the number of customers who would switch providers. As of this October 1st, AT&T will not accept any new DSL accounts nor modify existing ones, and we understand from AT&T sales people that the company intends to terminate DSL service in our area next year.
Take Action Now: Many of you have already responded to either Cindy Hollister or myself, but if you have not responded and would be interested in either voice, internet, or both please respond to either Cindy Hollister at [email protected] or myself at [email protected] and let us know your preference, along with your street address.
Another way to help: We are trying to raise an additional $3,000 to move this forward with our attorney. If you can contribute any amount please send it to the Comptche Broadband Committee, PO Box 333, Comptche, CA 95427.
Thank you,
Cathy Rayden
Co-Chair, CBC
