We are grateful to the Colorado legislature for funding the Community Food Assistance Provider Grant for the coming year! Feeding Colorado maintains relationships with more than 150 farms across the state. This grant allows food banks to purchase food locally, supporting farmers and retailers and getting food on otherwise empty shelves for our neighbors. Derek Hoffman of Hoffman Farms speaks about the important impact this program has made.

Our Executive Director Mandy Pullaro and Government Relations Manager Ron Meehan alongside our five food bank CEOs recently attended the Feeding America National Leadership Conference in Dallas where they welcomed Feeding America’s new CEO Dennis McDonough and Chief Government Relations Officer Rebeckah Freeman Adcock! From the White House to the Department of Veterans Affairs, McDonough has devoted his career to improving the lives of the American people through large-scale systems change and measurable results. Freeman Adcock has nearly thirty years of experience in policy and government, shaping critical strategies for the food and agriculture communities. We look forward to this new chapter under their leadership and wish a fond farewell to outgoing CEO Claire Babineaux-Fontenot!

A huge congratulations to Community Food Share and their team who were awarded Feeding America’s Network Celebration Award at the conference. When SNAP payment delays threatened smaller neighborhood grocery stores, Community Food Share and Feeding Colorado responded with urgency and ingenuity. Recognizing that the closure of these stores would cut access to fresh foods for neighbors facing hunger, the food bank developed a targeted voucher program to sustain local grocers through the crisis. More than 1,800 vouchers were distributed through trusted community partners, helping preserve both food access and dignity of choice for neighbors facing hunger.

Attorney General Phil Weiser visited Care and Share Food Bank this month to discuss efforts to address hunger in Colorado Springs and across southern Colorado. We underscored the valuable impact of the State Community Food Assistance Provider Grant which allows our network to purchase local food.

Last November, AG Weiser directed $400,000 from a recent settlement to strengthen Colorado’s food security infrastructure. This funded 81 food pantries across the state for improvements in refrigeration, food storage, and volunteer support. We are grateful to the Attorney General and look forward to continuing to work with him to strengthen food security statewide.

We recently joined Congresswoman Brittany Pettersen and Mayor Buck Wenzel for a mobile market food distribution in Silver Cliff! We spoke about the impact of federal nutrition programs like The Emergency Food Assistance Program in rural communities including those in Custer County. We also heard about the impact the Local Food Purchasing Agreement made to support agriculture and get fresh and local meats, dairy, and produce to neighbors throughout the region. We are grateful to the Congresswoman for cosponsoring the Local Farmers Feeding Our Communities Act to create a permanent replacement!

We attended Care and Share Food Bank’s annual Recipe for Hope Luncheon on St Patrick’s Day! It was a celebration of their incredible service to communities across Southern Colorado and a recognition of the many businesses, donors, volunteers, and supporters who make the work possible. Their organization has grown and come a long way since their founding in 1972.

Serving 29 counties across 47,000 square miles, Care and Share covers a food service area larger than the state of Pennsylvania. They provided more than 22 million pounds of food to over 1.5 million people last year.
