🐾 Pet Care 101 Monday: Adoption Do’s & Don’ts 🐾
Bringing home a new dog is exciting — but successful adoptions start with realistic expectations and good planning. Choosing the right dog for your family and lifestyle can make all the difference for both you and your new best friend. ❤️
✅ DO: Match the dog to your lifestyle A high-energy working breed may struggle in a low-activity home, while a senior couch potato may not enjoy marathon hikes every weekend. Be honest about your activity level, schedule, and experience.
✅ DO: Budget beyond the adoption fee Some dogs require regular grooming, professional training, special diets, medications, or higher veterinary costs. Long-coated breeds, doodles, poodles, and double-coated dogs often need routine grooming every 4–8 weeks.
✅ DO: Introduce existing pets before adoption Not every dog likes every dog — and that’s okay! Slow, safe introductions can prevent heartbreak and stress later. Many shelters and rescues can help arrange meet-and-greets before adoption.
✅ DO: Remember the 3-3-3 Rule Many newly adopted dogs need time to decompress and adjust.
🐶 3 Days: Overwhelmed, nervous, unsure
🐶 3 Weeks: Starting to settle in and learn routines
🐶 3 Months: Beginning to truly feel at home and show their personality
Patience and consistency are key during this adjustment period.
❌ DON’T: Adopt based only on looks Cute puppies grow up, and breed traits matter. Research energy levels, grooming needs, size, and temperament before committing.
❌ DON’T: Expect perfection immediately Your new dog may have accidents, anxiety, or behavioral quirks at first. They are adjusting to a completely new world.
❌ DON’T: Skip training and structure Clear communication, routines, and positive reinforcement help dogs feel safe and successful.
The goal isn’t just adoption — it’s a lasting match that keeps pets in loving homes for life. 🐾❤️
