Rural Resources Victim Services Victims suffer a tremendous amount of physical and emotional trauma. It may be difficult for you to reach out for help. What is a Victim Advocate?

We serve victims of abuse & crime in Stevens (956 S Main, Colville), Ferry (3328 Hall Creek Rd, Inchelium or by appointment), and Lincoln (by appointment) Counties in Northeastern WA. The primary injuries victims suffer can be grouped into three different categories: physical, financial and emotional. me, they may suffer “secondary” effects. But you will find that victim advocates can offer you information, support, and access to helpful services you might not know about. Victim advocates are professionals trained to support victims of crime. Advocates answer our Help Line and provide in-person emotional support. Advocates offer victims information, emotional support, and help finding resources and filling out paperwork. Advocates may also contact organizations, such as criminal justice or social service agencies, to get help or information for victims. Advocates go to court with victims. We serve victims of all crime types

Services we provide:
A 24-hour Help Line answered by staff during business hours and trained volunteers after hours;
Safe shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children;
Crisis intervention by trained and caring staff members who listen and help with safety planning, options and services;
Information and Referral to other services, including legal and financial help, counseling, housing, employment, and medical care;
Help with court orders so victims can gain legal protection;
Advocacy to help victims get legal, medical, financial and other services;
Support Groups for victims of domestic violence
Therapy referrals to contracted qualified therapists, based on availability of funding;

Children's Advocacy Centers (CACs) prevent children from having to retell the story of the violence that they experienced over and over again. But why is that so important?

Because it minimizes trauma and leads to better outcomes for children.

Children's Advocacy Centers (CACs) were created as a way to better serve children who have experienced abuse.

In the absence of a CAC, if a child discloses abuse, they may be asked to retell their story over and over again to law enforcement, child protective services, medical professionals, etc.

The CAC solves this problem by brining all of those groups together, so the child only has to tell their story one time, during a trauma informed Forensic Interview (FI)

A protection order is a civil court order that can help to protect someone who is experiencing violence such as abuse, harassment, stalking, and more.

Note: filing a protection order is not the same as filing criminal charges. Protection orders focus on safety, not prosecution of a crime.

Depending on your situation a protection order may:

▪️Prohibit someone from contacting you
▪️Require them to stay away from your home, workplace, or school
▪️Require them to surrender fi****ms

If you choose to report a crime here's an idea of what may happen next. Remember, every case is different so your experience may not match this exactly.

▪️Your safety come first: if you're in immediate danger, law enforcement will work to address your safety first.

▪️An officer may take a report: you may be asked to recount what happened, it's okay if you don't remember every detail right away.

▪️You may be contacted by an investigator. In some cases, additional interviews or evidence may be needed.

▪️The case may be reviewed by the prosecutor: if there is enough evidence, charges may be filed. Not every report results in criminal charges

During emergencies, some types of violence can become more dangerous or more extreme.

Fire evacuations do not cause violence, but for people who are already experiencing violence, situations like these can create unique challenges such as:

▪️Increased stress and tension in households can lead to escalation in violence.

▪️Difficulty accessing transportation or making private phone calls can make it difficult for survivors to access services.

▪️Limited availability in shelters and hotels can limit options for survivors to leave if their home or shelter situation becomes unsafe.
