Asian American Coalition of Ohio A grassroots, nonprofit organization working to educate, engage, and empower AAPI Americans. The event was organized by a core committee of 7 people.

Asian American Coalition of Ohio and Ohio Chinese American Association was founded in March, 2016 as a Non-Profit Organization in Ohio. The motivation of establishing AACO and OCAA originated from the 2.20 rally to support former NYPD officer Peter Liang. As a follow-up of the 2.20 rally, in lieu of preparing for the Ohio presidential primaries, we hosted a “Asian (Chinese) American Community and American Politics” forum in Dublin Ohio, with the aim of raising awareness of civil rights among Asian Americans, and encouraging them to go out to exercise their rights of voting for the presidential election. In the past couple of years, we have witnessed an increase in the number of incidents relating to civil right violations of Asian Americans including Ms. Sherry (Xiafen) Chen, Dr. Xiaoxing Xi and Officer Peter Liang, among many others. All these incidents further all pointed to us that 2016 will be a critical year for Asian American civil rights. We believe it is urgent and necessary to call for more active participation on Asian Americans in civil and political matters in the American society. To protect the civil rights of ourselves and our next generation and generations to come, we have to tie up, speak up and stand up. We also need to reach out to both Asian Americans and non-Asian Americans who are in support of what we believe and what we do. It is a long journey but the first step has to begin today. An inspiring community town hall with State Representatives Munira Abdullahi (HD-9) and Dr. Anita Somani (HD-8)! We discussed issues that matter to our community, including affordability, education, healthcare, property ownership, and civic engagement.

AACO Public Service Intern Hassan Azam introduced Rep. Abdullahi, and ACAESUSA Ohio Youth Chapter President Sophie Wang introduced Rep. Somani. Both representatives inspired us with their stories of breaking barriers and their dedication to addressing the challenges Ohioans face.

At this critical moment in American history, our discussion reinforced our shared responsibility to participate in civic life and make our voices heard—including by voting in the upcoming elections.

Hosted by AACO, in partnership with ACAESUSA, APIAVote,Justice for Ohio, and OCAA, this free event is an opportunity to connect with community leaders, discuss the issues that matter most, and check your voter registration status ahead of Ohio’s registration deadline.

We’re honored to welcome:

Rep. Munira Abdullahi (HD-9) — a first-generation Somali immigrant and the first Somali woman to serve in the Ohio Legislature.

Rep. Anita Somani (HD-8) — a first-generation immigrant from India, an OB-GYN physician with over 30 years of experience, and the first Asian American woman elected to the Ohio House of Representatives.

Twenty-five years later, we remember. 🕯️

On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 lives were lost — mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, friends, colleagues. We honor the first responders who ran toward danger, and the AAPI Americans who were among the victims and among those who served.

In the years that followed, some of our communities faced hate and suspicion simply for who they were. Yet time and again, we chose to stand together instead of apart.

Today, we remember. We honor. We stand together. And we always hope.
