Hi Glen Echo! Dreading the return of mosquito season? Buckets of Doom are surprisingly simple and pollinator-friendly way to knock down mosquito populations in your yard.
All you need is a bucket, water, a handful of dry grass, a stick, and a chunck of a Bti dunk (sold at hardware stores as Mosquito Dunks). The grass attracts mosquitoes looking for a place to lay eggs. The Bti dunk — a naturally occurring bacteria — kills every larva that hatches. No pupae, no adults. It is completely harmless to bees, fireflies, birds, pets, and people.
Place it in a shaded spot away from where you sit. Fill it only halfway. Add the stick so small critters can climb out if they fall in. Replace the dunk once a month.
