As Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month comes to a close, the work of honoring heritage does not end. Heritage lives in the stories we preserve, the traditions we carry forward, the leaders we develop, the young people we encourage, and the communities we strengthen together. Over the past month, we have celebrated history, service, education, culture, entrepreneurship, family, leadership, and community. Transforming Communities will continue turning those values into action by helping families connect, lead, learn, advocate, and build stronger futures. Heritage is what we inherit. Legacy is what we build.

Today we celebrate the Hispanic and Latino families and communities of Cuyahoga County. Current U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts estimates report that 7.7 percent of county residents identify as Hispanic or Latino. Behind that number are families, neighborhoods, businesses, students, cultural traditions, community leaders, and organizations contributing every day to the region. As Transforming Communities grows its work in Cuyahoga County, we do so with a commitment to listen first, build trusted relationships, support families, and recognize the strengths that already exist within the community.

Latino heritage is not only something we celebrate nationally or internationally. It lives right here in Central Ohio. Hispanic and Latino families, students, educators, entrepreneurs, faith communities, advocates, workers, and neighbors are part of the region's growth and identity. Current U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts estimates report that 8.9 percent of Franklin County residents identify as Hispanic or Latino. At Transforming Communities, we are proud to celebrate the people who make our communities stronger and to continue building opportunities for families to lead, connect, learn, and thrive.

Bolivian-born educator Jaime Escalante believed students could achieve at a high level when they were challenged, supported, and expected to succeed. At Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, he built a demanding mathematics program that helped students master Advanced Placement Calculus and drew national attention to what young people could accomplish when adults refused to lower expectations. His work later inspired the film Stand and Deliver. Escalante's legacy is a reminder that education can expand possibility, and that one committed educator can help young people see a future they may not have imagined for themselves.

Latino identity is not one race, one skin tone, one country, or one story. The U.S. Census treats Hispanic or Latino origin separately from race, and people who identify as Hispanic or Latino may be of any race. Across Latino communities are Indigenous, African, European, Asian, multiracial, and many other histories and identities. Recognizing that diversity matters because representation should reflect the full community. This month is an opportunity to celebrate what communities share while also respecting the differences that make every family's story its own.
