🚨 That “$5,000 e-bike” might legally be a motorcycle.
Not every electric bike is actually considered an e-bike under Washington law.
If it’s too powerful or too fast, it may be treated as an electric motorcycle instead. That can change:
• Where you can ride
• What laws apply
• Who may be responsible after a crash
Here’s the simple breakdown:
🚲 Class 1: Pedal assist only • Up to 20 mph
⚡ Class 2: Throttle or pedal assist • Up to 20 mph
🏍️ Class 3: Pedal assist only • Up to 28 mph
Some high-powered bikes sold as “e-bikes” don’t fit into any of these classes.
Before you buy one—or let your child ride one—make sure you know what you’re actually riding.
