At this week's meeting we had a great discussion about Wellness Coaching at OSU! Omar Khalfaoui is a senior Biology major on the Pre-Med track and also works as a Wellness Coach at the Student Wellness Center. We learned that wellness is an active, ongoing process which involves becoming aware and taking steps towards a happier, healthier, and successful life. There are actually 9 different dimensions of wellness and they are all interconnected! As a Wellness Coach, Omar is active in various services available to OSU students like Individual Coaching, Group Coaching, and Group Meditation. Today we had a special guest speaker: Dr. Dana Howard! She is currently a bioethics professor at The Ohio State University. We learned about the ways hospitals allocate resources and how they decide which patients receive care first. This is especially applicable now we are in the middle of a pandemic. Thank you Dr. Howard for speaking with us and answering questions!

At this weeks meeting we chatted with last years UHA Columbus President, Ishan Rola. He brought us back to the early days in 2016 when UHAC was just starting to be established as a non-profit public health organization. Since then, UHAC has worked hard to provide equitable health care access, establish connections with community health resources, hold volunteer events, and support leadership development in undergraduate students. During his time in UHAC, Ishan found his passion and drive for medicine and public health policy. He also gained valuable leadership skills that helped pave his way into medical school and will be vital as a future practicing physician.

Currently, Ishan is in his first year of medical school at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He spends most of his time studying, hanging out with classmates, or discovering the best cafes in Columbus. He has also been documenting his medical school journey through his Instagram page, . Go check it out!

The month of June commemorates a tremendous feat in US History, the Stonewall Uprisings of 1969 and a major turning point in the modern Gay Rights Movement. June, 2020 also celebrates the 5 year anniversary of the legalization of gay marriage in America. Now, all around the world LGBTQ+ communities and allies are coming together to celebrate how far we have come from times of intense prejudice, and to show pride in being your true authentic self. It is also an opportunity to reflect on what changes must still occur to ensure the safety and equality for people of all sexual orientations and identities. We acknowledge that there are still significant health care disparities among members of the LGBTQ+ community and we vow to work towards solutions, educate ourselves and others, and continually show support.

We are saddened, frustrated, and horrified to see the past weeks events of racially charged police brutality unfold not only in Minneapolis, but in Columbus, and all around the nation. The Black Lives Matter movement began in 2013 in response to the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, but its meaning and significance has existed since the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. 50 years later we are still fighting for equality.

We recognize the systemic racism that lives in the criminal justice system and police departments in America. The BLM movement and its meaning also extends into all aspects of our society. Massive racial disparities exist in our health care system. It is known that African Americans face disproportionately higher morbidity and mortality rates, are less likely to receive quality care, and live shorter life-spans in comparison to their white counterparts.

Positive actions can still and must be taken to change the future of America and work towards equality. Sign petitions, donate, exercise your right to protest, call your representatives, register to vote, and educate yourself and others. We urge everyone to do your part for the betterment of the Black community and America.
