Historic Westville is still moving to Columbus, its leaders say, but it’s just going to take a little longer than planned.

Dear Westville Executive Committee,

We are glad you exhausted every alternative to moving our village, including maintaining effective advertising to draw visitors to the site in Lumpkin. This sign we saw at the intersection of US 27 and GA 520 would direct visitors coming from Columbus or Atlanta, for example, right to us. However, it's turned backwards and faces South instead.

Sincerely,
KWIL

We've been tracking down the families and organizations who donated major structures to Westville recently, and we've only just begun to realize exactly how personal this debate is.

The problem is that the families who donated buildings to Westville signed away their right to have a say in what happened to those buildings at the beginning. It never occurred to the group who started Westville and composed the contracts that the buildings would ever be moved anywhere but to Lumpkin. So there isn’t a clause that protects the families in case of — well, in case of what’s happening now.

The families do not have a legal claim. But at the very least, we want the “Keep Westville in Lumpkin” campaign to show that some of the families (who literally donated their family property, heirlooms, and history to the care and stewardship of the Westville executive committee) disapprove of a rash decision to move the entire village.

We believe that the Westville Executive Committee has vastly underestimated the funds, tools, and experience required to move Westville professionally. In doing so, the Executive Committee will unnecessarily place our ancestors’ homes, shops, and possessions in peril. Further, the Executive Commit…

Gillian here- hope this finds you all well :)
we want to keep Westville. The reality of that being a feasibility is that it must produce revenue. I have some ideas; for example- if the village would set aside a nominal $20-40,000 (that's a lot to you and I but we are talking about millions in the balance here) and try advertising in Columbus, Macon, Eufaula, Dothan and Albany - and possibly offer a weekend shuttle service from some of those places... getting local colleges involved - history and drama department's for starters... I also have an idea (my big life goal) for an afterschool vocational training program in Stewart Couny that could produce potters, blacksmiths, quilters, cobblers, woodworkers etc... and also provide an opportunity for our hometown youth to gain culture and self-reliance in our states poorest county-- the place it is needed the most --without Westville my big dream wouldn't seem quite as purposeful... anyone else have ideas? that's what it's going to take guys.
