The Columbus Dispatch recently published an article covering the story of Natalie Bryan, someone with many familial ties to dementia. This article highlights how modern dementia treatments can help both the patient and the caregiver. If diagnosed early enough, many of the treatments available today can slow or even stop the progression of dementia. In the case of Natalie Bryan’s father, who was diagnosed with dementia in 2024, this allowed him to continue his life virtually the same. He was able to continue work, drive to receive his treatment, and maintain relationships with his grandchildren. The treatment also helped Natalie, as she didn’t have to become a full-time caregiver for her father and constantly worry about his health. The significance of these treatments can’t be understated, however their effectiveness is highly dependent on an early diagnosis. Had these treatments been available 20 years ago, my Papa may have been able to lead a longer, healthier life. My family’s hope is that more people seek early diagnoses and are able to use these treatments and have happy and enduring relationships with their grandchildren.
