🎭 MEET THE CAST | THE LARAMIE PROJECT

Meet Charu Gupta, who will portray April Silva, Catherine Connolly, Barbara Pitts, and Zubaida Ula in MRTC’s upcoming production of The Laramie Project.

This marks Charu’s third production with MRTC as an actor! Most recently, she lent her talents behind the scenes for The SpongeBob Musical.

When she’s not at the theatre, Charu lives in Columbus, Indiana, with her husband and cat.

In The Laramie Project, each member of our cast takes on multiple roles, bringing the voices and perspectives of real people from Laramie, Wyoming, to the stage. We’re excited to have Charu back onstage as part of the company telling this important story.

🏳️‍🌈 A COMMUNITY CONVERSATION | SEPTEMBER 18

What does it mean to move beyond simply reacting to discrimination and instead proactively create spaces where LGBTQ+ people feel supported, respected, and valued?

On September 18, join us for The Laramie Project Revisited: How to Proactively Support LGBTQ+ Community Members.

The evening will feature a special virtual conversation and audience Q&A with Dennis Shepard, father of Matthew Shepard, followed by a conversation with The Laramie Project director Eric Heyob and a community panel exploring advocacy, allyship, challenges, and hope.

🎭 MEET THE CAST | THE LARAMIE PROJECT

Meet Joyce Wire, who will portray Rebecca Hilliker, Sherry Aanenson, Debbie the Waitress, Minister’s Wife, and the Bailiff in MRTC’s upcoming production of The Laramie Project.

Joyce is no stranger to the MRTC stage, having appeared in many productions over the years, most recently In Praise of Sparrows and Shakespeare Powerplay. She has also performed with Bloomington Town Theatre and the Indianapolis Opera Company.

Now retired, Joyce continues to share her love of music and performance by singing with the St. Bartholomew Choir and the Rush County Chorale.

🎭 MEET THE CAST | THE LARAMIE PROJECT

Meet Daniel Kane, who will portray Greg Pierotti, Detective Sergeant Hing, Phil LaBrie, Fr. Roger Schmit, Rulon Stacey, and Detective Sergeant Rob DeBree in MRTC’s upcoming production of The Laramie Project.

This marks Daniel’s ninth production with Mill Race Theatre Company! Since joining MRTC in 2021, he has taken on just about every side of theatre, performing, acting, working crew, and directing across a variety of styles and genres.

Even with eight MRTC productions behind him, The Laramie Project presents something entirely new.

Daniel says he has yet to take the stage for a production quite like this one and is honored to have the opportunity to tell this story alongside this cast.

In The Laramie Project, each actor portrays multiple real people, moving between different voices, perspectives, and experiences throughout the production. We’re excited to have Daniel back on the MRTC stage for number nine!

Last night, the cast and staff of The Laramie Project had an incredible opportunity to step beyond the pages of the script and connect with someone who helped create it.

Through Zoom, we were joined by Leigh Fondakowski, a member of Tectonic Theater Project and one of the writers of The Laramie Project. Leigh shared insight into the process of traveling to Laramie, conducting the original interviews, and transforming hundreds of hours of conversations into the play we know today.

Our cast and staff were able to ask questions and hear directly from Leigh about the responsibility that comes with portraying real people and sharing their words, experiences, and perspectives with honesty and care.

As we continue rehearsals, conversations like this remind us that these aren't simply characters on a page. The words in this play came from real people, real conversations, and a community trying to understand what had happened.

We are incredibly grateful to Leigh for sharing her time and insight with us. It's an experience our cast and staff will carry throughout this process and onto the stage this October.

Every production begins with a first read-through.

For The Laramie Project, that first night feels different.

This remarkable ensemble will each portray multiple real people from the town of Laramie, Wyoming, bringing dozens of voices and perspectives to life. As we sat around the table for the first time, there were moments of silence, reflection, and emotion as the reality of the story settled over the room.

This isn't just a play. It's a community telling the story of another community, and with that comes tremendous responsibility.

This is only the beginning.
