Today marks the anniversary of the murder of FF John Nance of the Columbus Division of Fire. Please give the article a read if you’re unfamiliar with the story.

On July 25, 1987, 51-year-old John W. Nance, an Acting Lieutenant with Engine 2 of the Columbus Fire Department, responded to a massive 3rd-alarm fire at the historic Mithoff Building in downtown Columbus. The building housed Russell's Tall Girls Shoes on the upper floors, with the basement utilized for storage.While battling the blaze in heavy, pitch-black smoke, Nance fell through a hole in the floor that had been burned away, plunging directly into the burning basement. Despite heroic and desperate attempts by fellow firefighters to lower ladders and ropes to pull him out, the extreme fire conditions and structural collapses forced crews back. Nance ultimately succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning.

His murder remains unsolved.

🔥🏺📜 15 years after defeating Senate Bill 5/Issue 2 – the biggest political threat Ohio’s public workers have ever faced – the Ohio Association of Professional Fire Fighters are sharing important lessons in labor history with a new documentary, titled "Fight of a Generation."

IAFF members, including IAFF 8th District Vice President Mark Sanders, share how helped save collective bargaining rights and protect working families across Ohio. They also remind the next generation of fire fighters to stay engaged, united, and to never give up.

Every fireground task is time-critical. Search, rescue, ventilation, fire attack. they all have to happen at once.

When we’re understaffed, we’re behind before we even step off the truck.

Automatic mutual aid helps, bringing additional crews from neighboring departments so the job can be done safely and effectively.

But here’s the reality:

• Costs have doubled in the last 20 years
• No new permanent funding has been approved since 2008
• Staffing has been reduced significantly

Mutual aid ensures help is coming, but it also means those same departments are balancing the same challenges.

It’s a system that works because we work together, but it works best when every department is properly supported.
