As we learned last year, the spotted lantern fly has officially been spotted in Northern Indiana. This destructive pest feeds on hundreds of types of plants but can reproduce only when feeding on walnut trees, grape vines or tree of heaven. As they begin to hatch over the next few weeks it is imperative to keep an open eye on these pests to slow the spread. Hatchlings are are black with white spots and are tiny. Anyone spotting the insect should photograph it and send the image and location to [email protected], or call 1-866-No-Exotic.

Columbus Tree Canopy Partners’ Objective

Trees are an essential part of everyday life. The trees along streets, in parks, around playgrounds, and in backyards create an inviting environment in which one can live, work, and play. Trees enhance our quality of life by bringing natural elements and wildlife habitats into urban settings. Trees moderate temperatures, reduce air pollution and energy use, improve water quality, and provide benefits to our health and well-being. Additionally, tree advocacy is part of the environmental culture of the community.

Columbus Tree Canopy Partners has the objective of increasing the overall tree canopy (number of trees) in Columbus, to educate the public on the importance of trees, and to assess the existing condition of city trees.
