Josephine Groves Holloway was born in South Carolina and moved to Tennessee in 1919.
She worked hard to put herself through college and earned a degree in Sociology from Fisk University in 1923.

After graduating, she became a Girlsโ€™ Worker at Bethlehem Center.
She then trained to be a Girl Scout Leader at George Peabody College for Teachers.
During her training in 1924, Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low officially made her a Captain, giving her the authority to form troops for Black girls at the Bethlehem Center.

Josephine started with over 150 girls in 10 different troops, and by the end of 1924, there were over 300 girls involved!
In the 1930s, after leaving the Center, she continued to form unofficial Girl Scout troops by following a copy of the Girl Scout handbook.
These troops became officially recognized and registered in 1943.

In 1955, Camp Holloway was opened in Millersville, Tennessee, named after Josephine Groves Holloway.

Anna M. Mangin was an African American inventor. Little is known about her early childhood, but we do know that she was born in October 1854 in Louisiana. Anna Mangin invented the kitchen tool called the pastry fork and got it patented on March 1, 1892. The pastry fork was a tool that was in almost every domestic household. The utensil was used to mix dough for cookies, pie crusts, and other pastries without having to mix the ingredients together with their hands. The pastry fork was also used to beat eggs and mash potatoes. The pastry fork cut the time to make some of Americaโ€™s favorite dishes๐Ÿ’œโœจ
