Since it’s baseball season, this is a great story about our Bull Dogs…
Back in 1981, the Bull Dog baseball team advanced to the Sweet 16 by defeating South Ripley 7-1. A wild play, however, was talked about more than the outcome of the game itself.
David Grasch came to bat with one out and the bases loaded. He hit a one-hopper back to the mound. The pitcher threw to home to force the runner from third for the second out, but the catcher’s throw to first to double up Grasch was wild. Grasch moved to second and started to third when the first baseman’s relay to the plate was off target, allowing another run. The catcher then committed his second error of the inning by throwing wildly to third trying to get Grasch.
The sliding Grasch jumped up and scored standing up, giving him a tale to tell his grandchildren one day… a grand slam homerun on a bouncer back to the mound!
