Beginning each day with chanting, clapping, dancing and laughing (at “Harambee!” - Swahili for “all come together”) is just one reason the children, staff, and community members participating in the University District CDF Freedom Schools will be shouting “Let me put some Freedom in it!”
Scheduled
from June 20 to July 29, Maynard Avenue and Summit on 16th United Methodist Churches - along with the Children’s Defense Fund - will host the program. Proudly rooted in the American Civil Rights movement and offered at no cost to families involved, CDF Freedom Schools help low-income children reach their full potential through personal empowerment and civic responsibility. Too many children in low-income communities are behind their suburban counterparts in this vital skill. In classes of no larger than ten, college-age young adults will engage “scholars” with books relevant to their lives, helping the children to fall in love with reading, increase their self-esteem, and generate more positive attitudes toward learning. Projects ranging from art, music, writing, and games will help integrate the message and teach the children to work and play cooperatively. Parents are also required to participate in family oriented activities once a week. In the afternoon, the school - in conjunction with other community organizations - will engage students in hands-on learning such as growing food in the community garden, learning to repair their bicycles, building computers, and exploring the enrichment resources at Ohio State. Maynard Avenue and Summit on 16th United Methodist Churches will host the programs as part of a larger mission of both churches to invest in the lives of families in their neighborhood, developing long-term relationships that can break the cycle of poverty.
