Giving Tuesday, the Global Day of Giving is right around the corner. The United States Cavalry and Armor Association’s fundraising goal of $250,000 will build the Cavalry and Armor Soldiers Memorial. A donation of $50.00 from 5,000 people will help us reach our goal; of course, we appreciate donations in any amount. All donations are tax-deductible. We will be collecting donations on the Giving Tuesday Site until 7 December 2021.

The black granite memorial will be in front of the Maneuver Center of Excellence Headquarters on Gardner Field. The artwork of Jody Harmon, the Armor School’s artist, will depict the history of the Armored Force and all who served throughout our country’s history. The Obelisk will list the names of those scouts and tankers who made the ultimate sacrifice during Desert Storm and Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. In the spirit of the Holiday Season, please support our mission of commemorating the selfless service and sacrifice of the many men and women serving and who have served as scouts, cavalrymen, and tankers.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE U.S. CAVALRY AND ARMOR ASSOCIATION the oldest military-related association in the United States.

One hundred and thirty-six years (136) ago today (November 9, 1885), a group of cavalry officers at Fort Leavenworth formed the U.S. Cavalry Association, now the Cavalry & Armor Association, for the professional unity and improvement and the advancement of the cavalry service. Highlights of the U.S. Cavalry and Armor Association formation follow:

• Established headquarters at Fort Leavenworth with branches or chapters at West Point and Fort Reno due to the dispersion of the Cavalry from coast to coast and border to border.

• The founders gave honorary memberships to the Commanding General of the Army, General Will T. Sherman; Lew Wallace, soldier, lawyer, governor, diplomat, and author of Ben Hur; Phillip St. George Cooke and Williams S. Harney, distinguished retired general officers; and two ex-generals of the Confederacy, Fitzhugh Lee, who became governor of Virginia, and “Fightin’ Joe” Wheeler, then a member of Congress from the State of Alabama; John Codman Ropes, a distinguished military historian of the day, and Professor Jean Roemaker, vice president of City College of New York and author of Cavalry, Its History, Management and Uses in War.

• The founders elected a Medal of Honor winner, Major Abraham K. Arnold, then the 6th Cavalry, as president, and Captain Theodore J. Windt of the 4th Cavalry as secretary.

• In an Army with less than 27,000 officers and men, there were about ten regiments of Cavalry, containing as potential members of the Association only 424 officers.
