Our Story--To end human trafficking
In January/February 2017, American John Moriarty, Aussie, Chris Smith and Indian Tharan Kumar, along with the expedition team, ran 1,000 miles (1,610 kilometers/2,000,000 steps from Mumbai to Chennai) in a unique trip that explored the human slavery issue in India. According to the United Nations, human trafficking is the fastest growing crime in the world. Moriarty and Smith set out on this journey to raise funds and awareness in Sparrow’s Hopes’ efforts to rescue and rehabilitate some of the children/young adults (mostly females) who have been wrapped up in the world of slave trade. Numerous Indians joined the trio along portions of the route. In 2018, Moriarty returned to India and biked and ran 500 miles with Indian Melvyn Samuel and Tammy and Godfrey Fernandez, from Chennai to Korvalam. Moriarty and the team returns in 2019 to run/bike 700 miles toward the mid to northern coastal areas ending up in Kolkata (Calcutta). The goal is to establish a home for young women, called Sparrow’s Hope House. This home is for women who are extracted or rescued out of this dark lifestyle of bo***ge.
