Our cozy corner for the Children’s Hospital Hospice Team is coming together!

I have to smile as I realize how perfect this project is because our guy LOVED a cozy corner himself! Somehow Henry is still right here with us, pointing us in the right direction. After 10 years.

You can contribute on our website, via Venmo, check, or Amazon gift card!

Thanks friends.

Ten years ago today was Henry’s big farewell movie event. Ahead of time I had posted an update on his condition and what to expect. I was unsure about re-posting it again today, as I know it’s uncomfortable to read. But I decided that we can all sit in some discomfort- that’s what empathy is.

I have never liked the phrase “I can’t imagine what you’re going through”. Actually you probably CAN imagine. But you don’t want to.

Sorry to add my anger to this memory but it was definitely there at the time and has not gone away.

This event was so lovely and thank you to everyone who arranged it and was able to attend. A really special send off to a kid who loved a movie and really loved his people.

10 years ago we were planning for Henry’s Make-A-Wish event and hoping he would feel up to it. Second photo shows our ride!

For most of the past decade I have not looked too closely at memories from this time of year, but on this 10th anniversary I am taking a peek and will be sharing here.

Our society does not talk about illness or death in a healthy way and it has been making me angry for 10 years. Thankfully there are professionals in this space to walk families through it and I will also be celebrating the Hospice & Palliative Care Team at during this time.

If you’d like to help improve their office space while remembering Henry this year, you can donate on our website: forwardto175.org, via Venmo, check, or Amazon gift cards are welcome also.

Yesterday I was given the beautiful opportunity to speak to the Palliative and Hospice care team, reflecting on our experience 10 years ago.

Some of those memories now feel as if they are being viewed through a thick glass- still there but blurry. And after reading through a few Facebook posts from the time I decided that I can leave those memories blurry. They are truly tough to revisit.

In recognition of this team that walks with families through the worst things imaginable, we are fundraising to convert this corner of their offices into a cozy self-care space.

It’s bittersweet to think about the people in our lives now who never got to meet Henry. But it’s beautiful to see how he can still be shared with new friends and loved ones, still be very present for all of us.

Our friend Zev and his girlfriend Raquel wore Henry shirts and visited his tree at the school he and Zev attended together. 🧡💜

We had our annual date at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Foundation Zoo Wildlights event last night. I was excited to see a couple active animals! There was a line for the elephant exhibit so I will have to meet that new baby another time.

This has become a nice tradition to remember Henry as we head into the holidays. Last night Bill and I both felt a little sad as we sat in the aquarium- one of his favorite stops. Halloween had me a little sad this year too. That’s the good and bad news about loss. Your person is always with you, but just not the way you want them to be?

We miss you Henry.

Sending out a last-minute special donation request! We are collecting funds to donate for some improvements to the Nationwide Children’s’ PICU staff break room. Most of us don’t want to imagine how emotionally and physically taxing this work is. PICU staff get kids at their sickest moments, and parents at their absolute lowest.

The second photo is Henry’s room in the PICU when he first arrived in April 2015.

The third photo is November 2015, when Henry was back in the PICU with pneumonia that kept getting worse. I’m wearing the blue hat because he had a procedure done that day to drain fluid from around his lung.

Both times he recovered with their care and was able to get back home. We are forever grateful and will never forget.

If you’d like to chip in for some enhancements to the staff break room, please make a donation at forwardto175.org, Venmo Gretchen or Tommy, mail us a check, or hand us some cash. We’ll take it all!

Thanks friends.

Henry’s go-to conversation starter was “what’s your favorite villain’s defeat?” I love knowing that some friends wear their shirts when they need a little confidence boost or reminder that the good guy always wins. (In our favorite stories at least!)

In recognition of Henry’s time in the PICU (pediatric ICU) during his illness 10 years ago (!) we will be donating funds for a coffee bar area in the break room of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital PICU. If you’d like to support this project please Venmo Gretchen or Tommy or hand us some cash or a check!
