I spent some time today trying to find photos from each of Henry’s 16 birthdays. I found all but 2006 and I’m sure I’ll obsess about that one until I find a photo on my mom’s Facebook or something. A couple of these are obviously first day of school pictures but that was right at the same time of year.

16 birthdays is a cruelly small number but looking back at these photos actually made me feel the abundance of our beautiful life together- we had a lot of fun with friends and family: Crew and Buckeyes and Wendy’s Gymnastics and The Lion King 3D. Gifts of books and puzzles, videos for his collection and then later dvds. I don’t quite remember the story with that Star Wars poster that he’s standing proudly in front of in 2009? But that’s our front door that it’s taped to so that was a special celebratory location.

Happy birthday Henry, we won’t stop celebrating you!!

Ten years ago today was Henry’s big farewell movie event. Ahead of time I had posted an update on his condition and what to expect. I was unsure about re-posting it again today, as I know it’s uncomfortable to read. But I decided that we can all sit in some discomfort- that’s what empathy is.

I have never liked the phrase “I can’t imagine what you’re going through”. Actually you probably CAN imagine. But you don’t want to.

Sorry to add my anger to this memory but it was definitely there at the time and has not gone away.

This event was so lovely and thank you to everyone who arranged it and was able to attend. A really special send off to a kid who loved a movie and really loved his people.

10 years ago we were planning for Henry’s Make-A-Wish event and hoping he would feel up to it. Second photo shows our ride!

For most of the past decade I have not looked too closely at memories from this time of year, but on this 10th anniversary I am taking a peek and will be sharing here.

Our society does not talk about illness or death in a healthy way and it has been making me angry for 10 years. Thankfully there are professionals in this space to walk families through it and I will also be celebrating the Hospice & Palliative Care Team at during this time.
