It might be unpopular to those who don’t understand the realities of law enforcement, but it is concerning to see departments adopt increasingly restrictive policies on vehicular pursuits and the Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT).
When utilized by trained personnel, the PIT maneuver is one of the most effective and safe tools available to bring a high-risk situation to a controlled end within minutes. Letting a fleeing suspect drive recklessly through populated areas exponentially increases the danger to innocent motorists and pedestrians. Too often, overly conservative pursuit policies seem driven more by liability concerns over cruiser damage than by a genuine focus on public safety and community protection. Decisive intervention isn't reckless, it's often the fastest way to neutralize a moving threat. This being said, there’s some departments that will terminate you immediately.
