Columbus Urban Debate League

Columbus Urban Debate League The Columbus Urban Debate League helps students gain academic skills through debate and use those skills to find excitement in education. Happy debating!

The Columbus Urban Debate League was founded in 2011 by Reverend Richard Jessie, with the help of his sister Betty Maddox. The league is an extension of Emory's debate program, second in Georgia and twenty-first in the country. Students involved in this debate league have made commitments to it and know the benefits of it. Debating has improved self-confidence, public speaking skills, critical thi

nking skills, academic performance, and the character of those who have joined. Students go to three local competitions within Columbus and three Atlanta Urban Debate League competitions every year. Those who participate value the experience of their debating and are apart of the studies that show urban debaters have higher GPAs, graduate rates, college admissions, and more! The type of debate the Columbus Urban Debate League exhibits is Public Policy. In this type of debate, students are given evidence to work with, tailor, and solve each competition through forty-five-minute rounds in which they and their partner try to achieve the judge's vote on the affirmative or negative side. There are four to five rounds every competition and an awards ceremony afterwards, and they are very exciting and social! So, Students, if you would like to join your debate squad, message our page or call Reverend Jessie from our "About" page. And, Parents, involve your student today by doing the same!
