πŸ’œ August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day
A day to remember the lives we have lost to overdose, honor those in recovery, support families and loved ones, and commit to preventing future tragedies.
Overdose is a public health issue, not a personal failure. Substance Use Disorder is a complex, treatable health condition that can affect individuals, families, and communities. When we increase awareness, share resources, and replace stigma with compassion, we help create a path where more people feel safe seeking the support they need.
πŸ’™ Every life matters. Every story matters. Every person deserves support.
Together, we can:
β€’ Remember those we have lost
β€’ Support individuals and families impacted by substance use
β€’ Increase access to prevention, treatment, and recovery resources
β€’ Learn how to recognize and respond to an overdose
β€’ Break the stigma that prevents people from seeking help

The Alliance for Substance Abuse Progress (ASAP) is committed to providing education, prevention resources, and community support through Rethinking Wellness.

πŸ“˜ KNOW THE FACTS ABOUT SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER
Fact #4: You Can Make a Difference
Ending stigma starts with each of us.
Supporting someone with substance use disorder (SUD) doesn't require having all the answers. It starts with compassion, understanding, and a willingness to see the person, not just the disease.
Here are 5 ways you can help:
πŸ’™ See the Person – Every person deserves dignity, respect, and the opportunity to recover.
πŸ’™ Start the Conversation – Honest, judgment-free conversations can replace shame with hope and encourage someone to seek help.
πŸ’™ Choose Your Words Carefully – The language we use matters. Person-first, respectful language helps reduce stigma and reminds people they are more than their diagnosis.
πŸ’™ Help Connect Someone to Treatment – If someone you care about is struggling, offer support in exploring treatment options and available resources.
πŸ’™ Support Recovery – Learn more about substance use disorder, volunteer with recovery organizations, attend community events, or simply encourage someone on their recovery journey. Small acts of support can make a lasting difference.

When communities choose compassion over judgment, more people feel safe asking for help, and more lives are changed through recovery.
πŸ’™ When we replace stigma with empathy, we create opportunities for healing.

πŸ“˜ KNOW THE FACTS ABOUT SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER
Fact #3: Recovery Is Possible
Every recovery journey begins with hope.
Recovery from Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is possible. While every person's journey is unique, recovery starts with believing that healing can happen and with the support of family, friends, and community.
Like other chronic conditions, SUD requires ongoing care and commitment. Recovery doesn't always follow a straight path, but with treatment, healthy coping strategies, and continued support, people can live full, meaningful, and productive lives.
πŸ’™ Recovery is strengthened through connection. Many people continue meeting with counselors, participating in support groups, mentoring others, or engaging with local recovery communities. These relationships provide encouragement, accountability, and hope for the future.
When we see the person, not just their addiction, we help create an environment where recovery can thrive.
πŸ’™ When we replace stigma with empathy, we create opportunities for healing.

πŸ’™ EVERY LIFE MATTERS: Know the Signs. Carry Narcan. Save a Life.
Did you know opioid overdoses are responsible for a significant number of drug-related deaths worldwide? Education, awareness, and knowing how to respond are key steps in preventing overdose deaths and supporting our communities.
Naloxone (Narcan) can reverse an opioid overdose and save a life. Learn how to use it, carry it if you are able, and help spread the word. Everyone has a role in creating safer, more informed communities.
🚨 If you see these signs of an opioid overdose, call 911 immediately and administer Narcan if available:
β€’ Small, constricted β€œpinpoint” pupils
β€’ Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
β€’ Slow, shallow, or stopped breathing
β€’ Choking, gurgling, or unusual sounds
β€’ Discolored skin, lips, or fingernails
β€’ Slow, irregular, or no pulse/heartbeat
πŸ’™ Knowing what to do can save a life.

August is a time to raise awareness. It starts with being prepared.

As we enter a month dedicated to opioid overdose awareness and fentanyl education, we invite our community to take an important first step: learn how to save a life.

The opioid crisis affects families, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and communities across Indiana. One conversation, one training session, and one prepared responder can make a difference when every second counts.

Indiana University's Citizen Opioid Responders (COR) program offers a FREE, 30-minute online naloxone (Narcan) training that equips everyday people with the knowledge and confidence to recognize an opioid overdose and respond until emergency help arrives.

Awareness begins with education. Education leads to action. Action can save lives.

Join us this August as we recognize National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day, International Overdose Awareness Day, and other efforts to reduce overdose deaths by becoming part of the solution today.

πŸ“˜ KNOW THE FACTS ABOUT SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER
Fact #2: Treatment Is Available
Recovery begins with reaching out.
Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a treatable medical condition. While recovery takes time, dedication, and support, there are many effective, evidence-based treatment options available to help people regain their health and build meaningful lives.
Treatment isn't one-size-fits-all. Depending on a person's needs, it may include inpatient or outpatient care, residential programs, counseling, support groups, or Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), an evidence-based approach that combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies for opioid use disorder.
πŸ’™ Don't wait to ask for help. Whether you're seeking support for yourself or someone you care about, resources are available.
πŸ“ž Dial 2-1-1 to connect with free, confidential local resources across Indiana, available 24/7.
