Stonewall Columbus Statement on Ohio Senate’s Override of Governor DeWine’s Veto on HB68
https://stonewallcolumbus.org/stonewall-columbus-statement-on-ohio-senates-override-of-governor-dewines-veto-on-hb68/
Stonewall Columbus stands firmly against the Ohio Senate’s override of Governor DeWine’s veto on HB68, a measure that significantly undermines the rights and well-being of transgender individuals in our community. This action disregards the vital importance of gender-affirming care, recognized by medical professionals as essential to the health and survival of transgender youth.

As we have consistently advocated, decisions about medical care should be made by patients, their families, and their healthcare providers, not politicians. The Senate’s move not only infringes upon these personal freedoms but also threatens the safety and inclusivity of our sports programs.

We are deeply disappointed that the Ohio legislature has chosen to prioritize discrimination and politics over the health and equality of our citizens. Stonewall Columbus will continue to fight against this legislation and support the transgender community, reaffirming our commitment to advocacy, education, and the protection of all individuals’ rights.

The actions of the Ohio legislature in this instance are not just a rebuke to the transgender community but an alarm for all who believe in fairness and equality under the law. As we face this setback, we are reminded of the power of our voices and votes.

As the November 2024 elections approach, we urge everyone to recognize the weight of their civic responsibilities. We call on our community members to ensure their voter registrations are current, to educate themselves on the stances of their representatives, and to vote with the rights and dignities of all in mind.

We urge our accomplices, allies, supporters, and community members to join us, to stand in solidarity with those affected, and to hold our elected officials accountable for their actions.

To our community most directly impacted by this politicizing of their identities we see you, we support, and we will continue to stand with you.

Following a week of communicating with numerous collaborators and partners, including verbal statements and written calls for action in response to Ohio House Bill 616, Stonewall Columbus has released our official statement, vehemently opposing Monday's proposed bill. Here is a link to the statement, which includes links to the several calls for action and statements given by Stonewall leadership throughout this past week.

Week one of April means that we're a quarter way into 2022 - can you believe?! Here are some highlights from Q1 here at the Center:

Image 3: Our Trailblazers are always getting into some fun - here are snapshots of two of the many events they hosted over the last three months.

Image 4: Our gallery space was filled to the brim with art from local creators in the Le****ns Benefitting the Arts show that ran from February 25 through this past Saturday, April 2.

Image 5: We were honored to host the Ohio HRC Board members from Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati for their first in person gathering in over 2 years!

Image 6: As part of the ongoing, collaborative Patient Empowerment Series with Equitas Health Institute, we continued the series where we left off in 2021 with another session dedicated to uplifting the experiences of Black women living with HIV.

Image 7: As one of our Partners in Residence, Brothers in Unity hosted several events, including their Paint & No Sip brunch in March with their Brothers Who Brunch program.

Image 8: The Center came ALIVE during the Nurturing Ourselves, Healing Ourselves health & wellness fair for Le***an, Q***r, & Same Gender-Loving Women - we are grateful to have collaborated with Equitas Health Institute, Le****ns Benefiting the Arts, and the Women's Fund for this amazing event.

Image 9: Our Executive Director, Densil (he/they) joined a panel at King Ave Church on Sunday, March 27 for a panel about the intersections of race and LGBTQ+ identities.
