ETSS Tewahedo Social Services

ETSS Tewahedo Social Services ETSS is a freestanding, separately incorporated 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that began in 2000 as an outreach service to the Ethiopian community.

Uplifting adult and youth immigrants, refugees, low-income and underserved communities through employment, education, support, health, wellness, financial literacy and cultural celebration and so much more—creating brighter futures together. In 2009, in order to expand its services to the larger refugee and immigrant community in central Ohio, ETSS formed the Grassroots Services Coalition Group wit

h the Somali, Asian, Hispanic communities, and members of the Federation of African Organizations in Ohio. To further broaden its services, ETSS also merged with the Refugee Immigrant Chamber and Fountain of Life Foundation. ETSS continues the commitment to supporting strong and healthy families, enhancing access of African and other immigrants to community services, and building multicultural and inter-generational relationships to help them become more productive members of the larger society through employment services, the youth development program, translation/interpretation services, health outreach, ESOL services, and community outreach.

Mental Health Matters for Men

This Men's Health Week, let's remember that strength isn't just about pushing through. It's also about checking in, speaking up, and taking care of ourselves.

Men are often encouraged to be strong for everyone else, but their physical and mental health matter too. Routine check-ups, open conversations, and seeking support when needed can make a significant difference.

A simple conversation, a doctor's appointment, or asking someone how they're really doing may help save a life.

Let's stand shoulder-to-shoulder in support of the men in our families, workplaces, and communities.

What is one thing we can do to better support men's health and well-being?

Despite the rainy weather, yesterday’s ETSS Job Fair was still a success. We were grateful to connect job seekers with employers and community partners who continue creating opportunities throughout Columbus. Sometimes the biggest impact happens in smaller rooms where real conversations and real connections can take place.

Thank you to everyone who came out, supported, networked, and shared resources with our community. We also appreciate our employer and organizational partners for showing up and investing in workforce development and opportunity.

Events like these remind us that progress does not always have to be loud to be meaningful.

Big smiles, brave hearts, and some impressive spelling!

The 4th Annual ETSS Spelling Bee was an incredible celebration of our young learners and all they accomplished. Watching these children step up, challenge themselves, and shine in front of a cheering crowd was such a proud moment.

Every participant was a winner for showing courage, confidence, and a willingness to learn and grow.

Congratulations to all of our amazing spellers, and thank you to everyone who helped make this event unforgettable!

The Michael Austin Memorial Award is now open! Graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue an education this Fall 2026 semester are encouraged to apply.

Michael Austin had a deep commitment to social justice that led him to a life of service. His passion for social justice guided him to ETSS Tewahedo Social Services, where he found his love for working with immigrant and refugee youth. His dedication quickly propelled him into the role of Youth Program Lead Coordinator, where he organized summer programs, facilitated the Youth Summit, and established the Youth Collaborative Board. One of Michael’s notable achievements during this time was his establishment of community gardens on both the east and west sides of Columbus, fostering sustainable food sources and community engagement. His legacy lives on through not only the lives that he touched but through the Michael Austin Memorial Scholarship Fund.
