He is a true hero!

On this day in 1929: Medal of Honor recipient, U.S. Army Sergeant Matthew Leonard, is born in Eutaw, Alabama. After serving in the Korean War, Sgt. Leonard also served in Vietnam. On February 28, 1967 Sgt. Leonard's platoon came under heavy attack. While rescuing a wounded companion from outside the defensive perimeter, Sgt. Leonard's left hand was shot by an enemy sniper. Sgt. Leonard refused medical attention so that he could coordinate and assist his men in the fight. Eventually, the enemy was able to relocate their machine gun into a position that put the entire platoon at risk. Realizing this, Sgt. Leonard charged at the enemy machine gun. After being shot several times, through courage, determination and his love of his fellow soldiers, he managed to eliminate the crew manning the machine gun. Still alive and able to move, Sgt. Leonard propped himself against a nearby tree and continued to engage the enemy until he succumbed to his many wounds. For his actions, Sgt. Leonard was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1969. His wife Lois received the award on his behalf with their five children.
