Honoring Ohio’s Pilgrimage to the Mother Jurisdiction: A Reflection on Legacy and Continuity

The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Ohio, under the leadership of the 67th MWGM Honorable Maurio D. Powell, I, proudly acknowledges the distinguished Brothers of this great Jurisdiction who pilgrimaged to the Jurisdiction Massachusetts and the City of Boston—the cradle of our Masonic origin—to participate in the 12th Biennial Reopening of African Lodge No. 459, hosted by the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.

African Lodge No. 459 occupies a singular and sacred position in the historical landscape of African American fraternal life. Its genesis on September 29, 1784 when Prince Hall and fourteen free Black men were initiated in Boston, represents not merely the founding of a lodge, but the emergence of a transformative institution that has shaped Black civic leadership, intellectual tradition, and communal responsibility for nearly two and a half centuries. The legacy born in that moment continues to inform our identity, our moral charge, and our collective labor as Prince Hall Masons.

The presence of the Jurisdiction of Ohio Brothers at this historic reenactment stands as a testament to our enduring commitment to historical preservation, jurisdictional fellowship, and the sacred duty of honoring the lineage from which we descend. By returning to the site of our institutional birth, we reaffirm our connection to the struggles, triumphs, and visionary leadership that define Prince Hall Masonry.

We extend profound gratitude to every brother who represented the MWPHGLOH with dignity, discipline, and pride. Your willingness to step away from professional obligations and family responsibilities to participate in this commemoration reflects a deep reverence for our shared heritage and an unwavering dedication to the Craft.

In an age where confusion often masquerades as progress, we must remain steadfast in our duty to call evil by its name and to declare wrong as wrong. The commemorative march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge stands today as a living testament to courage—a sacred reminder that the fight for justice, dignity, and equal rights is not confined to the pages of history.

Sixty‑one years ago, brave men and women faced brutality with unwavering resolve. Their footsteps carved a path toward freedom. Today, our footsteps must protect that path.

Those who gather in Selma do more than remember; they recommit. They affirm that silence in the face of injustice is not neutrality—it is surrender. And surrender has never been the way of our people, our legacy, or our Craft.

As Prince Hall Masons, we are called to stand firm in truth, to speak with moral clarity, and to act with righteous purpose. Whenever injustice attempts to disguise itself as progress, we must expose it. Whenever wrong seeks acceptance, we must resist it. Whenever darkness rises, we must be the light.

The struggle continues, but so does our resolve.

The march continues, but so does our strength.

The dream continues, but so does our duty.

May we walk boldly, speak truthfully, and labor faithfully—until justice is not an aspiration, but a lived reality for all. ✊🏾

With profound respect and deep sorrow, the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Ohio extends our heartfelt condolences to the family of Bro. Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson — Civil Rights giant, prophetic voice for justice, and devoted Prince Hall Mason hailing for the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Illinois thru Harmony Lodge No. 88.

Bro. Jackson’s life was a testament to courage, conviction, and unwavering service to humanity. He marched, he spoke, he organized, and he lifted generations with a message rooted in faith, dignity, and hope. His legacy is woven into the fabric of American history and into the hearts of all who labor for equality and freedom.

As a fellow Prince Hall Mason, he walked uprightly, served faithfully, and carried the light of our ancient craft into the public square with honor. His example will continue to inspire Brothers across the jurisdiction and around the world.
