As we recognize Banned Books Week, we want to hear from the writers and readers in our OWA community.
When you think about book bans, what comes to mind? What does it mean for a book to be challenged or removed from a library or school? And how do restrictions on what people can read affect writers and the literary community?
Here’s a surprising example: even Stephen King’s On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft has been banned from schools. PEN America reports that On Writing was among King’s works subjected to book bans during the 2025–2026 school year.
A book about the craft of writing has ended up on a banned-books list. That alone might give us something to think about.
