Columbus Young Marines

Columbus Young Marines The Young Marines is a not-for-profit youth education program for boys and girls ages 8 through the completion of high school. until 12:30 p.m.

We meet for two 13 week sessions per year. One in the Spring and the other in the Fall. The initial cost of the program is $85. Each 13 week session that follows is $50. The meetings are held at the American Legion in Columbus, IN on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. The Young Marines strengthens the lives of America's youth by teaching the importance of self-confidence, academic achievement, honoring

our veterans, good citizenship, community service, and a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Young Marines learn new skills, and earn rank. They earn ribbons in areas such as CPR, swimming, map reading, drug prevention training, conservation, first aid, academic achievement, community service and physical fitness. All Young Marines must be actively enrolled in public, private or certified homeschool. Failure to maintain enrollment in one of the above is grounds for dismissal from the program. You may be asked to provide documentation for proof of enrollment.

The Young Marines and Recruits took their Physical Fitness Test, where everyone passed!

For Veterans Day we helped open the doors for veterans at the Columbus Applebees, and we had some kids present a color guard for the Four Seasons Retirement Home Veterans Appreciation Event.

They also attended our weekend long encampment, Friday was just for our Young Marines. They played lots of football and bonded over s’mores around the campfire. Saturday morning they enjoyed a big breakfast together and after the recruits joined us. Saturday, after the recruits finished their tests, they played lots of team building games and activities such as pool noodle hockey, kickball, and mine field. Mine field is a game where they have to lead their blind folded team mate through the mine field (pool noodle obstacles) to try and obtain the object, with out touching a mine. Another activity they did was a pellet gun shooting course (this was heavily supervised and they had another brief gun saftey class). They also had a night map and compass course that they had to try and find the hidden objects by following the coordinates given, and only having a map, compass and one red light. Saturday evening Mr. Riley led a flag retirement ceremony where we respectfully retired old, worn out flags.

This last session as the “Columbus Young Marines” was a great one! We had lots of physical training, drill time, team building games, and we were able to participate in the Hope Heritage Parade. We also had one of the local fire departments come by and show the kids all about the fire trucks. They explained everything on them, they demonstrated how they put on all their gear, and talked about the importance of fire saftey and having a family escape route incase of a house fire.

We are a youth program that helps teach today’s kids, values and how to stay off of drugs.
The main values of the Young Marines is to learn Leadership, Teamwork and Discipline. We teach our kids how to be great leaders, stay drug free with a healthy lifestyle and physical training. Some things that the kids learn about are, Drug Demand Reduction; this teaches them about the effects and side effects of drugs, and how to stay away from them. We also teach them basic "field skills" - how to build a shelter, how to have a proper campsite, how to navigate with only a compass and a map, and what plants, animals, and insects are good and which are bad. They also learn the basics of drill - how to stand in formation, how to march, and facing movements. We are heavily involved with Veteran appreciation programs, and we try to do as many community events as we can.
Some activities we do as a unit are weekend long campouts, and brown county hikes, where they are required to use the skills they learn. We also have marksmanship training, where they learn how to properly use and stay safe around fi****ms, then we take them to the range and they practice, heavily supervised. We also have swim qualifications where kids will be tested on the basics of swimming. And lots of games!!!
