According to the American Red Cross, more than 350,000 people in the United States will suffer a cardiac arrest this year.

Heart disease, which can cause sudden cardiac arrest, is the 2nd leading cause of death among Franklin County residents aged 18-59 and the leading cause of death among adults aged 60 and older.

During a cardiac arrest emergency, the heart stops beating or beats too ineffectively to circulate blood to the brain and other vital organs. CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED (automated external defibrillator) training can help save a life if a person's breathing or heart stops.

As we recognize CPR and AED Awareness Week, note that the American Red Cross offers training for a variety of services including CPR and AED. For more information on CPR/AED training or to take a class, visit https://loom.ly/OGM_E-4

The Healthcare Career Collaborative of Central Ohio, a partnership between the four Franklin County hospital systems facilitated by Aspyr Workforce Innovations, has created a website for insights on six priority healthcare careers as well as highlights for jobs available, salaries and area schools offering training for them.

Among these critical careers is the Respiratory Therapists. Respiratory Therapists are responsible for assessing, treating and managing patients with breathing disorders, providing therapies such as oxygen administration, nebulizer treatments and ventilator management.

Collectively, the four Franklin County hospital systems employed around 450 Respiratory Therapists in 2025, up from 290 in 2024, with a vacancy rate of 10%, down from 25% in 2024.

May is Stroke Awareness Month. According to the American Heart Association, Stroke is the No. 2 cause of death worldwide and a leading cause of disability, despite stroke being largely preventable, treatable and beatable.

In Franklin County, strokes are more common among adults age 65+. While there are disparities between gender and racial groups, these are likely due in part to disparities in risk factors for stroke such as heart disease.

You are at risk for a stroke if you:
• Have high blood pressure, diabetes, high blood cholesterol, heart disease or a prior stroke
• Are from a family where others have had a stroke
• Are overweight
• Are inactive or do not exercise
• Have a lot of stress
• Eat foods high in cholesterol and fat
• Smoke or use to***co
• Drink too much alcohol
• Use street drugs
• Have a head injury or a bleeding disorder

Hospitals play a critical role in the community-wide effort to reduce sleep-related deaths, in part, by showing all parents who delivered a baby in one of Franklin County’s nine birthing hospitals or were admitted to one of our nine NICUs an educational, safe-sleep video prior to being discharged.

In 2025, 14 infants died in Franklin County due to a sleep-related condition. That’s 14% of all deaths among Franklin County children younger than 1 year old.

Through the 1st quarter of 2026, 89% of parents who delivered a baby in a Franklin County birthing hospital reported viewing the video before discharge.

The video highlights the elements of a safe home sleep environment for newborns, the importance of not smoking in the house, and tips for keeping yourself alert and awake while caring for your baby. The video has also been translated into the 5 languages most seen in central Ohio: French, Spanish, Nepali, Somali, and Arabic.
