On Thursday, February 19th, Director of Government Affairs Rob Nixon testified before the Senate Law & Public Safety Committee on a number of law enforcement related bills being tracked by the State PBA. Specifically:

S1227 The bill establishes the “Law Enforcement Critical Mental Health Assistance Grant Program” and appropriates $3 million. While the bill as introduced was intended for mental health professionals to use the grants, Rob was able to win passage of an amendment to the bill to allow the State PBA to access the grant funding for its Peer Support team and their services. The bill was unanimously released and sent to the Senate Budget Committee for further review.

S2789 The bill requires law enforcement officers to have updated photograph be taken every three years for their police identification. Rob’s testified that while an up to date photograph could be useful the bill did not address the reality that there is no uniform police identification in the State. With hundreds of police agencies in New Jersey and the ease in which someone can forge an ID, Rob testified that the bill should be amended to address this issue. The bill was also released by the Committee and sent to the Senate Budget Committee for further review.

Earlier that same day, Rob was able to secure amendments to provide critical public and officer safety exemptions to a bill that would ban law enforcement officers from wearing masks. The day in Trenton also included several meetings with union leaders and legislative staff on health care reform issues that are critically important to the State PBA and its members.

Congratulations to the both of you!

$2,000 a month for health insurance is beyond absurd. We simply cannot afford this any longer. The increase in healthcare costs is actually reducing our take-home pay—at a time when the cost of everything else continues to rise. This is unacceptable and unsustainable.

FOR YEARS, Trenton Democrats knew the state health plan, which provides health insurance for 500,000+ state and local government employees, was heading for fiscal disaster. Now on the verge of total collapse, employees will be picking up the tab, decreasing their net pay significantly. Ever notice how these problems don’t exist in other states? We need new leadership.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the officer who was stabbed, family members, friends, and all of his coworkers at the Camden County Police Department. Keep fighting brother! Violence upon Officers around our country is happening way too frequently. There were 4 instances in close proximity, which include the two Virginia Beach Officers who were gunned down, to the Officer in Pennsylvania who was shot and killed by an active shooter in the hospital, and now this stabbing. We are thinking of all the victims in these incidents as well as all the victims in our country that have seen violence in their own communities. Keep your heads on a swivel and watch each others six.
