DYK? When the news of George Washington's death reached Britain flags were flown at half mast in the UK and at sea as a mark of respect. William Pitt the Younger was the Prime Minister, he'd been a vocal opponent of Britain's role in the War of Independence viewing it as a "wicked, barbarous, and unjust" conflict. He advocated for a more conciliatory policy towards the American colonies, believing that the war was costly and ultimately detrimental to Britain.

George Washington's funeral took place on December 18, 1799, at Mount Vernon, four days after his death. The service was attended by family and friends, with military honours and a Masonic ceremony, reflecting his significant status in the nations history. Whilst news of his passing didn't reach London until some weeks later the British responses were respectful despite past conflicts: Royal Navy ships and govt offices lowered flags to half-mast, and the London Morning Chronicle praised Washington as a figure of "unmixed admiration."

The commemoration of light is a central theme in this holiday season. In countless ways at this time of year, people around the world celebrate the emergence of light from darkness and the hope that this light brings.

As Freemasons, we cherish light because it plays such a significant role in our lives. This is the light that illumined our journeys in the past. It is the light that guides us now. And it is the light that will lead us into the future.

Light binds us together as brethren as we constantly serve our families, neighbors, communities, and world. In this light-filled season, may we shine ever brighter so that we may be beacons of brotherly love, charity, and hope to everyone we meet.

Best wishes to all of the Brothers of Fort Benning Lodge No. 579 F.&A.M. and their families. May you and your loved ones have a Merry Christmas and a joyful holiday season, filled with peace, love, prosperity, and hope. May we strengthen our fraternal ties and stay close to each other as we journey together in light.
