Community Needs Assessment in the Hilltop and the Bottoms!

The HillToms Project—a collaboration of Food Rescue US - Columbus, the FOOD Soldier, Crossroads World Outreach Ministries, and Red Migrante Ohio—is conducting a needs assessment among members of the Franklinton and east Hilltop communities! Our goal is to speak with as many residents as possible in order to understand what kinds of food and food assistance are available in Near West Side neighborh

oods, what residents perceive to be their most significant barriers to food access, and what resources would best help support resource pantries and other informal sources of food assistance. We hope to amplify the experience and lived expertise of this community, to spotlight information about resources that are already available, and to advocate for additional, intersectional assistance that meets the community's ongoing needs—whether those involve access to particular kinds of food, to housing, to healthcare, to transportation, to education, to employment, etc. If you are willing to be interviewed, if you are interested in having 2-3 team members conduct assessment interviews at your location, or if you have any questions, please be in touch!

‼️ONE MORE WEEK TO RESPOND!‼️

Our HillToms work will be ongoing, but in order to summarize and share the information you’ve provided, we’re closing the food access assessment to new responses on Sunday, October 22. That’s one week from today!

If you know of folks living on the near-west side who would be willing to share their experience trying to access food, please share far and wide! The survey takes about 10 mins, is totally anonymous, and is available in Spanish, Somali, and English. (Link in bio, as well as on these flyer images!)

We were delighted to join and so many other vital community resources last weekend for the Westside Community Summer Bash! Even with the rain, we got to talk to almost 20 westside residents about where and how they access food, AND (unexpected bonus!) we got to rescue the event’s surplus hotdogs and condiments and deliver them to the Van Buren Center. 💕🌭🎉

Where else should we set up our table this summer to chat with west-siders about food access? ☀️

We are continuing to do in-person interviews, talking through these questions with anyone willing to share their experience—but EVERYONE’S experience and expertise matters, and we want to make sure you are able to share your perspective even if you don’t come across our team doing interviews. 😃

If you live/work on the west-side or know someone who does, please pass this information along! The survey takes 10-15 minutes and will be HUGELY helpful in advocating for the organizations and individuals providing such vital community support on the near west side.

This week, we filled our planners. 🙌

We will be interviewing folks at Crossroads Free Food Friday at 4:30 today, and at Iglesia Refugio de Santidad after service on Sunday—and we’ll hopefully be chatting with all you wonderful west-siders at a special pop-up info session at the Food Soldier Canteen this Sunday! ❤️
