The Afghan community in Columbus strongly condemns a violent incident that occurred on the day of Eid at Sunrise Academy in Hilliard, Ohio.
On this important day, an Afghan community member peacefully attended Eid prayers with his children while carrying an A4-sized image depicting the victims of a recent attack on a drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul, reportedly carried out by Pakistan. His intention was to raise awareness among fellow Muslims about this tragic incident, in which more than 400 patients were killed, and over 260 others were injured.
Unfortunately, shortly after entering Sunrise Academy's premises, a group of approximately 8 to 10 individuals approached him aggressively. They verbally abused him, issued death threats, and then physically assaulted him. In a deeply disturbing turn of events, even his children were not spared and were also struck during the attack.
Following the incident, Hilliard Police provided initial medical assistance at the scene and officially documented the case. The injured individual was then transported to Mount Carmel Emergency Hospital on Sawmill Road, where he received further medical treatment.
The Afghan community views this act as a direct attack not only on an individual but also on the fundamental right to freedom of expression, which is protected under the Constitution of the United States. It is widely understood that many immigrants in the U.S. have fled countries affected by war, injustice, and instability. However, it is deeply concerning that some individuals continue to carry extremist mindsets and resort to violence instead of dialogue, logic, and mutual respect.
We trust that Hilliard Police will conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice. We also respectfully call on the leadership of Sunrise Academy to cooperate fully with law enforcement by providing CCTV footage and any other relevant evidence to help identify those responsible.
Furthermore, we urge Sunrise Academy to strengthen its capacity for organizing such large gatherings in the future and to ensure a safe environment where no individual faces violence during religious events.
The Afghan community stands firmly with the rule of law and will continue to pursue this matter through all legal channels until justice is served.
We kindly ask all brothers and sisters who witnessed the incident or recorded any videos during the Eid prayer to come forward and assist. Please share any relevant information or footage with Hilliard Police or the Afghan community to help identify the attackers and protect our community from such acts in the future.
Thank you.

Statement from the Afghan Community of Central Ohio

The Afghan community in Columbus extends its most profound sorrow and heartfelt solidarity following the tragic incident near the White House, where two National Guard members were critically injured. Our hearts are heavy as we think of those affected, and we firmly condemn this act of violence.

We want our neighbors and the wider community to know that the actions of one individual do not reflect the values, character, or beliefs of Afghans living in the United States. Our community stands firmly against violence of any kind and remains committed to peace, safety, and respect for the law.

Like many immigrant communities, Afghans came to the United States seeking stability, opportunity, and a hopeful future for their families. Here in Columbus, we work hard, raise our children, contribute to our city, and strive to be caring and responsible members of the community we proudly call home.

Today, our thoughts and prayers are with the injured National Guard members, their families, their loved ones, and all those who serve and protect our country.

We continue to stand for peace, safety, compassion, and strong community bonds for all.
