Emma Bear's EXTRA Care Buddies Providing trached stuffed animals to kids & families at Nationwide Children's Hosp

We're now officially one (1) year into this "new" project - called Emma Bear's EXTRA Care Buddies (EBECB), named to honor my sister and her favorite stuffed friend, Bear Bear - traching "stuffies" for Nationwide Children's Hospital and newly trach kids and their family members, for the Pulmonary ICU unit and one of the Neonatal ICU units. We are now fully up and running but I am constantly working

on our social media presence and business-type cards are attached to each EXTRA Care Buddy, explaining who we are and how to connect with us. A short story to make trachs less scary for children is still in the works and is our biggest goal for the first half of 2023 in addition to continuing to expand everything that we were able to achieve in 2022. As of January 2023, we have been able to make 15 donations with 5 to 20 stuffies in them. Donations made prior to August 2022, every stuffie had been donated or purchased by me, Brenda (my caregiver and head surgeon for EBECB), or my Dad and Betsy (my stepmom). Since then we have been fully funded by donations from across the United States and consisted of stuffies of every imaginable animal species, trachs, trach ties, several brands, both standard and custom, and neonatal to adult sizes. All trach "surgeries" are performed with sterile gloves, masked, and expired/unwanted trachs. Once they are donated to the hospital, they are stored in a sealed container until they are given to a family. In the future, it is our hope Emma Bear's EXTRA Care Buddies will be able to grow and support other units at Nationwide Children's Hospital, outpatient clinics, therapy, rehabilitation programs, and community-based service providers. The ultimate BIG dream is to be able to work with other hospital inpatient and outpatient programs across the United States. For the time being though we are so grateful to our friends and family who have been a small but mighty group making EBECB a reality.

Just a quick shout-out to get the week started on a happy note. As we alluded to in our January post, Emma Bear's EXTRA Care Buddies (EBECB) has had to slow are donation frequency due to the need for trachs. Well as the saying goes "ask and you shall receive" has certainly proven true for us. Once again our partnership with Pediatric Home Service (PHS), formerly known as Central Ohio Specialty Care, has stepped up to help. The Columbus OH branch donated a variety of trachs to us that are expired as well as trachs that are the wrong size or otherwise ill-suited for the intended patient. Their donation of more than 15 trachs also means that the materials used to make trachs (durable plastics, silicone, etc.) won't end up in a landfill taking decades to deteriorate. Instead, each and every one will be inserted, by Dr. Brenda, into a donated stuffie and become part of an EXTRA Care Buddy. It's a win-win-win! We're beyond grateful for this beautiful mutually beneficial relationship between PHS and EBECB and to the entire team at PHS for their dedication and support of EBECB.

In September we had to make an unplanned visit to Nationwide Children's Hospital and in the rush, Doogie was able to catch the attention of a supporter to get the latest group of EXTRA Care Buddies on their way to meeting their Boundless Buddy. In spite of the unexpected trip, we were able to donate more than 25 stuffies from Emma Bear's EXTRA Care Buddies of a wide variety of creatures from neighborhoods nearby, kingdoms, and galaxies far, far away. Several of the stuffies were purchased using funds donated to MJ's Birthday Fundraiser and another donation was comprised entirely of stuffies donated by one spunky and generous young lady. As always, we are incredibly grateful to all of you, our supporters, as none of this would be possible without you!

July's final donation came with a few challenges for Doogie and CH as the Care Buddy recruits came from a variety of backgrounds and skill sets. Like the kids who receive EXTRA Care Buddies, some are very young and do not know life without a trach while others are older and don't quite understand what is going to happen which can make for lots of big emotions and still others are old enough to understand what is changing but understandably, have many questions that may be difficult to answer. This group of EXTRA Care Buddies range from tiny triplet teddies to distractable dinosaur duo to a shy calf to a good-natured koala and a wise cupcake-loving teddy.- all unique in their abilities and skills but challenging for the teacher. In spite of the challenges, all of the recruits completed the necessary training, some taking a bit more one-on-one tutoring, to officially become part of the Emma Bear's EXTRA Care Buddies team and donated to Nationwide Children's Hospital.

July was a busy time for Emma Bear and Doogie as they had four of the largest groups of Care Buddy recruits since we started. Emma Bear has taken on an exciting side project, more on that another day, so it was decided that Doogie and Cozy Heart Penguin would take over all of the EXTRA Care Buddy training and certification classes for the foreseeable future. While Doogie and CH (Cozy Heart Penguin is quite difficult for many of the youngest Care Buddies to say so for the most part everyone calls her CH these days) are fabulous at training, supporting, and guiding new recruits they are not so good about making sure that the "other stuff" gets done. This includes remembering to post photos of the EXTRA Care Buddies when they're ready to go to Nationwide Children's Hospital or thanking our generous supporters. We grew so quickly that we all were happily overwhelmed by the donations and support for Emma Bear's EXTRA Care Buddies that we got behind in sharing our gratitude. Doogie, CH, and the rest of the human members vow to do better ... even if that means recruiting a special someone to be in charge of the "otter stuff" as Doogie is frequently heard whispering about when he thinks that he is out of earshot. First, please know that the length of time between posts. We are always working on creating EXTRA Care Buddies but that doesn't provide us with a great deal of content to share with you all between donations. We're always brainstorming ways to engage with you but for now, we are still here and excited to share the latest news in our cozy corner.

This week was the start of a big week for us at Emma Bear's EXTRA Care Buddies (EBECB) as we made our nineteenth (19th) donation to Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH)! This donation was made possible by the incredible generosity of the individuals and families who supported the fundraiser for MJ's 35th birthday back in January. As always, we are so grateful to all of you who have been willing to support what started out as a small idea to support children and families during a difficult time and has now become an integral part of NCH's H8B's comfort care regimen.

This post is overdue but in some ways hopefully, this means that more people will see what even a "smaller" donation can have. Our eighteenth donation to Nationwide Children's Hospital was made back in March and was funded in large part by donations made to MJ's 35th Birthday Fundraiser. Our seventeenth donation to Nationwide Children's Hospital was extraordinary for innumerable reasons but we'll stick to the most notable. The donation was comprised of 24 stuffed creatures ready and more than willing to become EXTRA Care Buddies. That isn't anything new as the vast majority of Emma Bear's EXTRA Care Buddies (EBECB) are excited to learn that they are destined for a big job of providing support to a child and family. What made this group extraordinary is the fact they were all purchased and subsequently donated by one family. Yes, one family decided to pull together and donate every one of the EXTRA Care Buddies in honor of their own incredible loved ones, Victoria and Alex. For reasons we will never know they saw what we at EBECB were doing and decided that they wanted to be a part of what we're doing. We are truly humbled and immensely grateful to Alex and Victoria's family for their support. Because of their donation, 24 kids will have a tangible reminder that they are not alone on this journey. They will also know that someone was thinking of them, cheering them on, hoping for them, and most of all that they matter to more people than they know, not just right now but yesterday and for an infinite number of days into the future. That is the power of every donation to EBECB but the power goes further than that as well. Every donation is in honor of someone and in the case of this, our seventeenth, donation is in honor of two individuals, Victoria and Alex. Each of the EXTRA Care Buddies has a tag attached to it saying who it was prepared in honor of. In some cases, the EXTRA Care Buddies are in honor of someone who is living with a trach themselves, as is the case with Victoria. In others, the EXTRA Care Buddies are in honor of someone who is no longer living, as is the case with Alex. The tags serve as a thank you to the individual or family who donated but the more powerful purpose of the tag is so that the honoree is known to at least one more person. It is something small and perhaps seemingly insignificant to some but to know that you have made an impact and will have a lasting legacy is something that can't be quantified. Alex will be remembered by not only the individuals who received an EXTRA Care Buddie but also the staff member at Nationwide Children's Hospital who turns the EXTRA Care Buddies into Boundless Buddies, the subsequent staff that are in and out of the recipient's room every time after, the family, friends, loved ones that are in contact with the recipient once they are no longer hospitalized, and every person reading this post. One of the greatest concerns, when a loved one passes away, is if and how they will be remembered. This is even more true when that loved one is a child. When we founded Emma Bear's EXTRA Care Buddies we did so in honor of a little girl named Emma, who loved her Bear Bear, who left this Earth after just three years of living. This is her legacy. It is also the legacy of every one of the EXTRA Care Buddies donated in honor of someone who is no longer living and a powerful reminder to each of us that even the tiniest pebble dropped in an enormous pond makes a ripple that continues to grow long after the pebble is out of sight. Thank you to Alex and Victoria's extraordinarily incredible family members for their donation and for allowing us to be a part of honoring and ensuring that Alex's all too brief life is never forgotten and Victoria's ongoing battle with Spinal Muscular Atrophy being fought every day with beauty and grace.

The end of March brought us back to Nationwide Children's Hospital with more than 50 new EXTRA Care Buddies for kids and their families facing a new journey of life with a trach. This is our sixteenth donation since December 2021 and one of the largest donations. While we don't get to see the impact that Emma Bear's EXTRA Care Buddies (EBECB) has firsthand, due to HIPPA and everyone's dedication to patient privacy, it is wonderful to hear stories from the incredible staff at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Since we are frequent visitors to Pulmonary ICU, H8B, we were lucky enough to hear from the nurses, respiratory therapists, and nurses aides about the impact the EXTRA Care Buddies are having in addition to seeing the selection process for making sure EXTRA Care Buddies are perfectly paired to become Boundless Buddies. Thank you to all of our wonderful donors who continue to make this program possible.

While Emma Bear's EXTRA Care Buddies (EBECB) has many supporters that donate stuffies there is another component that is not quite as easy to come by but vital to our operations. Tracheostomy tubes, more commonly known as trachs, are not only difficult to get due to them being prescription-grade medical devices they are also expensive ranging in price as high as $700 for custom sizes. EBECB has received expired or otherwise unusable trachs from families who have a loved one who is trached but this is not a sustainable way to ensure that we can continue. Enter Pediatric Home Service (PHS) "a pediatric health care company specializing in helping children with medical complexities and their families"
We have been blessed with a wonderful connection to the Ohio branches of PHS (Pediatric Home Service OH, formerly known as Central Ohio Specialty Care). Through them, we receive expired trachs as well as trachs that are the wrong size or otherwise ill-suited for the patient it was ordered for. This connection has proved invaluable to EBECB as we have received more than 85 trachs as well as trach ties. With each donated trach not only are we able to create an EXTRA Care Buddy but we're also eliminating medical waste. Due to strict federal guidelines for medical supplies and devices trachs that have been allocated to a specific individual cannot be given to another individual even if the actual trach never left the medical supply company's warehouse. The same is true for expired trachs and prior to connecting with us, these trachs were being thrown away, ending up in landfills. The donated trachs are just one amazing example of what is possible when a large company like Pediatric Home Service and a small charitable organization like Emma Bear's EXTRA Care Buddies come together to work towards a common goal. We are eternally grateful to the entire team at Pediatric Home Service OH (PHS OH) for choosing to partner with us and continue to provide EXTRA Care Buddies to children and families. It is impossible for us to adequately express our appreciation PHS OH for choosing to support and expect nothing in return. Thank you for all that they have done and for their commitment to EBECB is truly awesome and the epitome of the level of generosity they are known for as a company. We hope that this is just the beginning of a beautiful mutually beneficial relationship between PHS and EBECB for as long as EXTRA Care Buddies are needed as Boundless Buddies.
