πŸ›Ά Kayakers and paddle boarders β€” this one's for you!
Yesterday we covered the rules for motorized boats on Holloway. Today we're talking about the folks on kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes β€” because yes, Michigan law applies to you too!
A lot of people assume that if you're not running a motor, the rules don't apply. Not exactly. Here's what you need to know before you hit the water on Holloway Lake.
βœ… No registration required for non-motorized vessels under 16 feet β€” that's the good news.
🦺 You still need a Coast Guard-approved life jacket on board for every person β€” and kids under 6 must be wearing one at all times.
πŸ”„ The counter-clockwise traffic pattern applies to kayaks and paddle boards just like motorized boats. Michigan law doesn't carve out an exception because you're paddling.
πŸŒ™ Out after sunset? Carry a white light β€” a waterproof flashlight is all you need, but you need something.
🍺 Michigan's BUI laws apply on a paddle board the same as a pontoon. .08 BAC is the limit. Save the cold one for the shore.
🌿 And before you launch β€” clean your board or kayak and remove any debris, mud, or aquatic plants. Keeping invasive species out of Holloway matters to all of us.
Let's keep the lake safe and fun for everyone out there β€” whether you're running on horsepower or elbow grease! β˜€οΈ

🚀 Hey Holloway Lake crew β€” and anyone else spending time on the water this summer!

Since the boats and jet skis are out in full force, figured now's a good time to share a quick refresher on Michigan's inland lake boating rules. Nobody wants their fun day on the water to turn into a bad one β€” so let's keep everyone safe out there on Holloway.

πŸ”„ Go Counter-Clockwise
Michigan law requires all vessels on inland lakes to travel in a counter-clockwise direction. Think of it like a traffic pattern β€” everyone going the same way keeps things predictable and safe. If you're new to Holloway, just know: hug the right and keep moving in that counter-clockwise loop.

🚒 Meeting Another Boat Head-On?
Both boats turn right (starboard). You'll pass each other on your left (port) sides β€” same concept as two cars meeting on a two-lane road. Simple, but important.

πŸ“ Give Everyone Some Room
Michigan law is clear on this one β€” when you're running at more than slow/no-wake speed, you need to stay **at least 100 feet** from docks, rafts, anchored boats, swimmers, and the shoreline. Jet skis (PWCs) are held to that same 100-foot standard on inland lakes. Slow it down to no-wake speed if you need to get closer β€” that's what the rule is there for.

βš“ Passing a Stopped Boat?
Same rule applies β€” 100 feet minimum unless you've dropped it down to a slow, no-wake speed. Anchored doesn't mean invisible, and nobody wants a close call when they're just sitting there enjoying the day.

🐒 The Channel β€” No Wake. Period.
The channel connecting the main lake to the north side of the reservoir is a "no wake zone". Slow it down before you get there and stay slow until you're through. It's a narrow stretch with boat traffic coming from both directions β€” not the place to see how fast your boat can go.

These aren't just suggestions β€” they're Michigan law. Whether you're a Holloway regular or just visiting for the day, knowing the rules makes the lake better for everyone. Now go enjoy it! β˜€οΈ

UPDATE. PONTOON HAS BEEN RETURNED TO THE OWNERS DOCK. THANK YOU FOR EVERYONES HELP. Who’s missing a pontoon boat? It’s up against the rocks on the south side of the Mount Morris Rd., Bridge. Looks like the keys are in it and the engine is up so it probably floated off someone’s lift?

We just had a message with an update about the girl that was hurt on Memorial Day on Holloway. Family says she is recovering and hoping to be released from the hospital later this week to continue her recovery at home. We are continuing to send positive thoughts and prayers for her recovery.

A week ago, on Memorial Day, we went kayaking on Holloway Reservoir, and inadvertently left our paddles at the Columbiaville Boat Launch afterward. It was about 11.30 AM and was busy. We only realized this yesterday, when we wanted to go kayaking again! We are in the middle of training for our next kayak triathlon😒

The paddles are Carlisle brand, with black handles and orange paddles. They still have the numbers 26 and 203 on them. The one with the number 26 also has silver tape connecting the two handles in the middle.

Please let us know if you picked them up!

Kinds regards,

Kevin & Wiebke Papenfus

What a great morning at Holloway Reservoir today. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έβ˜€οΈπŸš€

A huge thank you to Ken Church for giving the Blessing of the Boats today. Ken did an amazing job and it was a really nice moment for everyone that attended.

Also a big thank you to Shannon for cooking hotdogs for everyone during lunch provided by the Holloway Lake Association. Little things like that are what make this community so special.

After lunch, everyone stuck around, talked, laughed, and just enjoyed spending time together on the lake. Days like today are a reminder of why so many of us love being part of the Holloway community.

Thanks to everyone that came out and helped make it such a successful event. Summer at Holloway is officially underway. πŸš€β˜€οΈ

βš“οΈ Blessing of the Boats – Date Change βš“οΈ

Due to the forecasted rain on Saturday, the Holloway Lake Association and Holloway Happy Hour have decided to move this year’s Blessing of the Boats ceremony to:

πŸ“… Memorial Day – Monday, May 25th
⏰ 11:00 AM
πŸ“ Goose Point – Holloway Reservoir

We’re looking forward to having the Holloway boating community come together to continue one of our favorite lake traditions as we officially kick off another summer season on the water.

Load up the boats, gather your family and friends, and join us at Goose Point as we celebrate community, safe boating, and another great summer ahead on Holloway Reservoir.

Please help us spread the word about the updated date and time.

βš“οΈ Blessing of the Boats – Holloway Reservoir βš“οΈ

As another summer season begins on Holloway, we’d like to invite all Holloway Lake Association members and Holloway Happy Hour boaters to join us for this year’s annual Blessing of the Boats tradition.

πŸ“ Goose Point – Holloway Reservoir
πŸ“… Saturday, May 23rd
⏰ 11:00 AM

This has become one of the great traditions on Holloway each spring as our boating community comes together to kick off the season, reconnect with neighbors and friends, and wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer on the water.

This event is primarily accessible by boat, so fire them up, gather the crew, and head over to Goose Point before the summer season gets rolling full speed.

We look forward to seeing the Holloway boating community out on the water once again.

βš“οΈ Here’s to safe boating, great memories, and another unforgettable summer on Holloway Reservoir.
