The journalists, storytellers and content creators of tomorrow are in high school classrooms today. The University of South Carolina is looking for someone to make a difference in the lives of young people and in the future of journalism. The Southern Interscholastic Press, a 100-year-old membership organization, is seeking a leader to begin the next century of service to high school and middle school broadcasts, publications and news sites across the South.

This is a staff position at the university with the opportunity to take on teaching duties if you wish. The position is housed in the University of South Carolina College of Information and Communications, which includes the School of Journalism and Mass Communications and the School of Information Science. The successful applicant will be organized and passionate about people and our mission. The application specifies a knowledge of journalism and scholastic journalism. There is no specific job or position that is a prerequisite. The successful candidate will understand the high school and middle school environment and the direction that journalism is moving in our world.

[CONVENTION CONVERSATION] Tune in next week to hear from WLTX News Director Sharranda Neal. She spoke to Richland Northeast students this morning about diversity, ethics, news coverage during COVID and more!

"I’m a black woman in a position and I shed light on things that wouldn’t have happened 5 years ago, ten years ago. It doesn’t matter the title I have. The importance, the benefit I bring to the room is I am Sharrranda."

We are sad to hear that Joe Greene, husband of past chair Amy Medlock-Greene (Dutch Fork HS, Irmo, S.C.), passed away last night. If you knew Joe, you knew that he had a big heart.

He received the Karen H. Flowers Outstanding Service Award in 2018. Amy said in her nomination, attending the SIPA convention “is how he chooses to spend his birthday weekend year in and year out! For most of the years, Joe has attended the convention, his birthday has fallen on that Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. But he has never complained about it or expressed a desire to be anywhere else; he's just happy to celebrate with his adopted scholastic journalism family. And from the warm welcome he receives from the SIPA board and attendees each year, I know they're happy to celebrate with him, too.

Find out more about Joe from our news post in 2018.
