Our mission is to provide financial assistance to breast cancer survivors in South Carolina who are financially “in the middle” which means they are either employed or have health insurance, so they don’t qualify for any assistance programs, but they don’t have enough money to cover all the expense that come with fighting breast cancer. Thanks to your donations, we were able to help another breast cancer survivor! Lakesha was diagnosed with breast cancer in October of 2024 and is currently receiving treatment at Roper St. Francis Cancer Center in Charleston. Although she has health insurance, she is struggling to pay her bills and cover the costs of chemotherapy and deductibles. We were able to give her money to keep her lights on thanks to YOU!!! Thanks to your donations, we were able to help Rhonda. At the end of 2023, Rhonda was diagnosed with breast cancer that required her to have a bilateral mastectomy followed by several rounds of chemotherapy. At the time, she was employed full time and approaching retirement. Unfortunately, due to the mental and physical effects of her diagnosis and treatment, she lost her job and is unable to work, causing her to get behind on all of her bills. For several few weeks, she has woken up every day and turned on her water just to make sure it had not been shut off due to nonpayment. With your help, we were able to pay that bill so that she can sleep a little better. Meet Janice, a breast cancer survivor we were able to help thanks to your donations. Janice was receiving treatment for breast cancer when the apartment building where she lived caught on fire. She lost everything in the fire, including all of the special bras she had purchased to wear due to her mastectomy. Unfortunately, she did not have renter's insurance and not much money to start all over. In The Middle stepped in and helped her furnish a new apartment and buy new bras and clothing. Tomorrow is and we need you to give so we can continue to help breast cancer survivors like Ms. Lily. She asked to remain anonymous because not everyone in her family knew about her diagnosis, so we called her Ms. Lily after her favorite flower. Here is her story in her own words: "In 2011, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. By God's grace and mercy, I am still here; tattered and torn, but present and accounted for. I have been in active treatment since my diagnosis, but this cancer has slowed me down quite a bit. At first, I was able to work, but a few years ago I had to stop working. I have been on many treatments and experienced every side effect imaginable but I've fought my way through it all. Lately things haven't been looking as bright because I have pretty much exhausted all approved treatment options. BUT I HAVEN'T GIVEN UP YET."

So what dream did Ms. Lily want fulfilled? A trip to the beach, dinner at a 5 star restaurant, a front-row seat at a concert? Nope. Her dream was much simpler, and quite honestly, much more dire. Her wish was to have her funeral paid for so that her family didn't have to find the money to bury her. She didn't have life insurance and with her diagnosis, was unable to get any. Thanks to your donations, we were able to help pay for her funeral when she passed so her family didn't have grieve AND figure out how to pay the expenses. We are more than half way through November but not half way to fulfilling Jennifer’s dream of seeing Africa. Jennifer has Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer and is fighting daily just to stay alive.
