THANKS TO THE FRIENDS OF ROSAMOND GIFFORD ZOO

Howls of thanks and appreciation to the Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park in Syracuse, NY for making the Red Wolf Coalition the recipient of their 2026 Conservation Fund donation. The Friends of the Zoo organization at Rosamond Gifford exists to provide financial support to the zoo through funds dedicated to the welfare of the animals, the zoo's educational programs and its family-friendly facilities.

Rosamond Gifford Zoo is a Red Wolf SAFE Program participant. We send another chorus of howls to the Red Wolf Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE) Program for the work they do to help in the effort to ensure that Red Wolves have places to thrive on the American landscape.

The family includes first-time parents Carolina and Jacques and their five pups, who were born in May. The exchange is part of a breeding program designed to maintain genetic diversity among red wolves living in human care.

We love the names of the new arrivals at the Museum of Life and Science (MLS) in Durham, NC. The name Mac Tire is explained in the narrative from the MLS. Sabine has great historic and present significance for the Red Wolf. The Sabine River forms part of the border between Texas and Louisiana. The Sabine National Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Louisiana was one of the last places where the Red Wolf existed prior to the official declaration of the species' extinction in the wild in 1980. It is home now to the Red Wolf-like canids being intensively studies by Dr. Joey Hinton, Chief Scientist at the Wolf Conservation Center.

Here's a great photo from Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington, Illinois. The Red Wolf SAFE Program zoos and nature centers rock! Mama Magnolia is probably wondering how long she can get a break from her rascals by hanging out in the log cave!
