Speaker: October 14: Growing Older and Better / Sean Spence

Growing Older and Better is a personal storytelling and community platform created by Columbia resident Sean Spence. Drawing on his experiences as an entrepreneur, nonprofit professional, poverty activist and person living with multiple sclerosis, Sean encourages people to approach aging with curiosity, intention and optimism. The platform brings together projects centered on meaningful relationships, memorable meals, faith, travel, service and personal growth. Through writing, podcasts, speaking and community initiatives, Growing Older and Better inspires people to stop waiting for the perfect moment and make choices that create a richer, more connected life at any age.

Speaker: September 30: FREEAIR Books / George Norman and Baylee Whitmore

Freeair Books is a people-first nonprofit publishing house dedicated to amplifying historically excluded voices and making publishing accessible. Founded in 2022 by George Norman and Baylee Whitmore, the organization publishes diverse works, provides editing and publishing services, supports local authors, and creates literacy programs for young writers. Through book sales, workshops, events and partnerships, FREEAIR helps creatives—particularly those from BIPOC, LGBTQ+, unhoused, justice-impacted and at-risk communities—share their stories and build lasting legacies. As a 501(c)(3), FREEAIR is supported by people who believe literature should reflect the full range of human experience.

After an exciting week away from our typical structure, celebrating 13 years of 1MC in Columbia, we are back to our normal meeting. As usual, at Columbia REDI Hub, 9 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 19.

1MC Organizer Brandi Herrman from Brandi Herrman Communications is presenting on her idea: Content on Cue.

Content on Cue solves a problem every small business owner and nonprofit knows too well: marketing content matters, but it never feels urgent enough to get done. Content on Cue sends you personalized text-message prompts built around your specific business — not recycled generic ideas. You reply by text with a quick thought, a photo, or a video, whenever it's convenient. Those replies become the raw material for your marketing content. It takes 2 minutes or less. It's the middle path between doing it all yourself (which means it never gets done) and paying a pro you can't afford.
