Chesapeake ACS Disaster Response

Chesapeake ACS Disaster Response This page is for the Chesapeake Conference for ACS Disaster Response (ACS DR). ACS DR is dedicated to helping others prepare for and recover from disasters.

As part of that mission, we offer training on personal preparedness and donations management. It is the practice of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, in response to the command of Jesus Christ to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, clothe the poor, heal the sick and comfort the widow and orphan. Seventh-day Adventists cooperate in the Adventist Disaster Response program, giving their time, tale

nts, money and goods to serve the victims of disaster. Adventist community Services Disaster Response is a program, under the umbrella of Adventist Community Services, which expands the role of ACS during the time of disaster in the local, state and national arena. The disaster response program provides a pathway through which the local church ACS can become involved and play a significant role at each level of government. All disasters occurring within the confines of the Chesapeake Conference, which includes MD, DE and three counties in WV, are the responsibility of the Conference. The execution of this responsibility comes under the direction of the Conference Disaster Response Director and the Conference Disaster Response Coordinators. The requirements to become involved, even on the local level following a disaster event, have increased as a result of the 9-11tragedy, It is the responsibility of the Conference Disaster Response organization to provide proper training, execute necessary exercises and provide the tools, to prepare volunteers to carry out assigned task, when called into service. Our response generally takes the form of operating collection centers, distribution centers and multi-agency warehouses. The Conference Disaster Response Director will oversee the setting-up of these operations, arranging for their continued management and the closing out of the operation at the proper time. Adventist Community Services Disaster Response is known nationally to be one of the premier organizations involved in Donation Management. This is not by happenstance; it is through an outstanding training program and much networking throughout the Disaster Response World. Adventist Disaster Response operates under Memorandums of Understanding with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the American Red Cross and many state emergency management agencies. It is also a founding member of the inter-agency compact called National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) and the affiliated state VOAD’s. Chesapeake ACS Disaster Response’s success depends on many well trained and committed volunteers in every area of the Conference. Jesus calls each one of us to service. Matt.22: 36-40, Matt. 25: 31-46. ACS DR is here to help prepare you for service in the 21 century.

Students from Atholton helped on several Fridays. We also had a few weekend working sessions with several others who helped put together an assembly line for the welcome kits. What a blessing.

Wow. Time has flown. Over the last month, we've put together a total of 200 Welcome Kits for individuals and 100 kits for families of four. Thanks to everyone who participated in this activity. That being said, churches in the Conference are still delivering food to refugees and will continue to do so for the next few months. I will post pictures shortly. Thank you!

This past weekend we finished another 30 single person welcome kits and 11 four person kits. That brings us to 60 single kits and 20 four person kits or supplies for about 140 refugees.

Below are some pictures of the inventory we're sorting and storing in one of the conference rooms at the Conference offices.

There is an opportunity to help those affected by flooding in the Ellicott City/Catonsville area. We are working with other organizations to "muck out" homes and help with cleanup. So, if you're healthy, willing, and able, please consider volunteering this Sunday. We are meeting at 7:30 am at the Miracle City SDA Church at 100 S. Rock Glen Road, Baltimore, MD. Wear pants and sturdy shoes. Other cleaning gear will be provided.

To register for this opportunity, please contact Derrick Lea at 202-212-9412 or email him at [email protected] and copy [email protected].

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Here's how we wrapped up 2017.

The Advisory Board met in November to discuss 2018 activities. We are planning more crisis care training (ICISF), donations operations training, and working to provide new training opportunities.

Additionally, we attended the Maryland VOAD meeting in December. This was held at the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). We look forward to continuing our involvement in the state VOADs. For more info on VOADs, check out https://mdvoad.communityos.org/cms/home. We also participate in the Delaware VOAD and hope to renew greater involvement with the WV VOAD.

Finally, reparations and painting of the kitchen trailer and utility trailer have been completed. We also have a dually truck to pull them.

There are other plans in the work, and we pray those plans will enable us to help communities and churches prepare for challenges that come our way.
