Slow Food Katy Trail

Slow Food Katy Trail Slow Food Katy Trail seeks to create lasting change in our local food system to ensure equity, sustainability and pleasure in the food we eat.

To join Slow Food Katy Trail (and support our mission), please go to www.slowfoodusa.org and click on Join/Renew Our chapter is a gathering place for people who have a passion for safeguarding local farms, regional and multi-cultural food traditions and for supporting foods grown sustainably and with affection. Our events are venues for building food culture and community. Through local-foods dinn

ers, potlucks, tastings, films, farm tours, volunteer days and work with local elementary-school children, Slow Food Katy Trail engages with our community and the broader Slow Food movement. We partner with local and national activists, chefs, farmers and organizations already working for direct change to our food system. We encourage you to join us in our effort. We heartily welcome new members and new energy for the cause. To learn more about the national organization or to become a Slow Food Katy Trail member, please visit Slow Food USA at slowfoodusa.org

Slow Food Katy Trail closed its chapter in 2016, after a
13-year run in mid Missouri. However, many of our former officers and members/followers are actively living and advocating Slow Food principles. Please see Bernadette's Bites for local, national and international food news of the same variety that we used to post here. Thank you!

Speaking of hearty soups, this is a fantastic recipe for a night such as this. Made it a few days ago, and wish I had leftovers for tonight. It's a very thick and souplike dish. Sometimes I add a little chicken stock and/or water to thin, but it's great as it is. Also, you don't have to use cannellini beans; any good dried bean would work, I imagine. This time I used an heirloom red-and-white bean grown by friends Kathy and Don Love.

Parmesan rind and a kitchen sink’s worth of aromatics give heady flavor to this classic pasta fagioli recipe with beans and pasta.

'SOUP FOR SYRIA': CHEFS SHARE RECIPES
TO RAISE FUNDS FOR REFUGEES

Why food? Because Massaad is a cookbook writer and photographer. She grew up working at her parents' kabob shop in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Then she became a force in the Slow Food movement, starting the Beirut chapter, and racked up prestigious gastronomic awards for books like Man'oushe: Inside the Street Corner Lebanese Bakery.

"Many of those people, in percentage, pay more taxes than even Donald Trump himself. There are people who by working the farms, working the land, working in the restaurants, working in the wineries, are helping move America forward in ways that we can't even imagine."

MARGOT MCMILLEN AND WHEAT FROM MISSOURI GRAIN PROJECT
TO BE FEATURED AT SLOW FOOD ST. LOUIS EVENT

Featuring all local ingredients and the farmers and artisans that brought them to your plate.

Here's a taste:
Since 2007, Missouri Grain Project has promoted local grains for local consumers. A local market is essential because while Missouri farmers raise a lot of grain, it is all exported, meaning that farmers are victimized by the commodity system and compete with growers all over the world, making it impossible to make a decent living from their inputs and labor. This wheat is soft wheat, used in pastries, cookies, muffiins and, of course, pancakes. It is the wheat traditionally raised in mid-Missouri. The St. Louis agent for Missouri Grain Project is Eat Here St. Louis.

Guest Producers Include:

Margot McMillen of the Missouri Grain Project;

Alicia & Josh Davis from Green Finned Hippy Farm;

Chris Bolyard from Bolyard's Meat & Provisions;

Dan Kelly from Blue Heron Orchard.

With artisan coffee by Pete Cohen of Stringbean Coffee and artisan breakfast cocktails by Cocktails Are Go!

With the legal battle raging over the implementation of controversial Obama Administration clean water rules, the next president is likely to face the daunting task of formulating a comprehensive plan to cut-down on water pollution from Midwest farms.

Turmoil and uncertainty often mark the lives of oyster tongers and others who make their lives on the water. Still, we celebrate with the Gulf Coast today.

I grew up eating fried cornbread next to bacon-infused collard greens, often for breakfast. My grandfather would rise with the sun, don his button-up flannel and loose Wranglers, and prepare a hearty meal that would keep his stomach humming for hours while he toiled in his vegetable garden and woods...
