After several generations, St. John’s appears to have a successor hiking adventure for the young people! The venue is a bit more exotic and the hiking appears ro be a bit more refined. Check out the St. John’s page.

From the early 1960s at least thru the 1970s, the Reverend John M Barr of St John's Episcopal Church in Columbia, SC, took a group of young people on a week long annual summer hike on the Appalachian Trail. The groups ranged in size from 6 to 15 hikers. He was an experienced outdoorsman and each trip was a memorable event (spiritually, communally and athletically) for every hiker. He insisted on careful stewardship of the AT and the surrounding mountains.

The culmination of each trip was a climb to the top of Mt LeConte in the Smokies and a day basking in the luxurious accommodations (relatively) at the lodge. Another highlight of many trips was a visit to Franklin, NC where Uncle John's uncle, Rev Rufus Morgan, lived at the old home place (Nonah) and was the Rector of St. John's Cartoogechaye, where Uncle John is buried. Rev Morgan was also an avid mountain man and hiker. A few of the trail trips included a day hiking with Dr Morgan.

The purpose of this page is for all our fellow hikers to share memories, pictures and reconnect with our band of brothers and sisters. Please post your special memories and spread the word to your Facebook friends who were also hikers.
