We specialize in dyslexia and ADHD. Sandhills offers a Speaker Series, tutoring programs and a Summer Skills Camp.

Sandhills School in Columbia, SC is the leading college prep, private school for bright students with dyslexia in Grades 1-12, offering Orton-Gillingham instruction, small classes, and big opportunities in a supportive community. Sandhills School is an Orton-Gillingham accredited school for first through twelfth grade students with average to superior intelligence who have been diagnosed with a learning difference. Sandhills is also the only Teacher Training Center in the Midlands accredited by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators.

This , we’re celebrating something that makes our faculty pretty special. 💜 And during Dyslexia Awareness Month, it feels especially worth sharing.

At many schools, you may find one or two teachers trained in the Science of Reading or the Orton-Gillingham Approach. At Sandhills, 100% of our teachers are trained Orton-Gillingham practitioners.

That means every Sandhills teacher has spent countless hours learning, observing, discussing, and practicing how to teach students with dyslexia and related learning differences.

Because at Sandhills, understanding how our students learn isn’t one person’s specialty. It’s part of every teacher’s job.

What does Orton-Gillingham actually look like in the classroom?

All through Dyslexia Awareness Month, we're taking a closer look at the principles behind the Orton-Gillingham Approach and how they come to life every day at Sandhills.

We're starting with and one of the principles people recognize most: simultaneous multisensory instruction.

For our students, learning isn't just listening to a teacher or reading a page. They see it, hear it, say it, and write it, all at the same time. Tracing in beads and sand, building with letters, writing in shaving cream: every tool connects what a letter looks like and sounds like to how it feels to form it.

And that mindset doesn't stop in Language Training. You'll see hands-on learning in math, science, and every subject in between.

Because great minds don't think alike. We teach differently. 💜🦌

Sometimes the best reminder comes straight from our students. 🦌 “My helpful brain helps me a lot. I am good at math. I am good at square roots. I am fantastic at Legos…” 🧠 We love this little glimpse into all the different things a brain can do. During Dyslexia Awareness Month, it’s an especially good reminder that reading and writing are only part of the picture. Every student brings strengths, interests, ideas, and ways of thinking that deserve to be seen. 💜

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month 💜 and around here, dyslexia isn’t something we only talk about in October. It’s what we study, what we teach, and what we understand every day.

All month long, we’re digging deeper into the facts, the myths, the science, and the strategies surrounding dyslexia, along with what the experience of learning with dyslexia can really look like.

The more we understand dyslexia, the better we can support students. So this October, we have a lot to talk about. 🧠📚

It’s 🎉 and we have a BIG accomplishment to celebrate! Congratulations to Mrs. Hedgepath, who has officially earned her Clinical Level certification through the Orton-Gillingham Academy! 👩‍🏫💜

Teachers work incredibly hard for those letters after their names, and advancing to the Clinical Level is no small feat. Building on her Associate Level training, Mrs. Hedgepath completed a minimum of 100 additional hours of coursework and 200 additional hours of practicum. That means hundreds of hours spent deepening her knowledge and practice of Orton-Gillingham instruction!

Clinical Level certification expands on the Associate Level and prepares practitioners to address the needs of struggling readers of all ages, including students with dyslexia and more complex learning profiles.

That is a LOT of time, learning, teaching, and dedication to becoming even better at serving our students. 🥳 Way to go, Mrs. Hedgepath, C/OGA! We are so proud to have your expertise at Sandhills! 💜🦌

The college acceptances are officially rolling in! 🎓💜 For this , we’re celebrating Sarah, who received an acceptance to Columbia College! 🎉 What an exciting way to kick off college acceptance season for our Class of 2027. Way to go, Sarah! 🦌

We love when Camperdown and Chandler come to town! 💜 Yesterday’s cross country race and volleyball games happened right in the middle of the school day, which meant our younger Bucks and classmates got to join in the excitement and cheer on their friends! 🦌📣 A special congratulations to our Middle School volleyball team, who battled through an exciting match and won the third set to take the WIN! 🏐👏 There’s nothing quite like a home crowd full of Bucks!

What does “The Word Collector” have to do with Mrs. Browy’s job at Sandhills? 📚 Turns out, quite a bit! This morning, Mrs. Browy joined Mrs. Hooker’s youngest Bucks as a guest reader and shared how she gets to collect the stories of Sandhills every day. 📸 Teachers send photos, she captures moments around campus, and then she gets to use words and pictures to tell the world about all the amazing things happening here!

💜 Mrs. Hooker’s guest reader program gives her students a chance to meet the people working behind the scenes at Sandhills who they may not see in their classrooms every day, and we love giving our youngest Bucks a peek at all the different people and jobs that keep Sandhills going! 🦌

Mrs. Senneseth had a great day representing Sandhills School at the A’ja Wilson Foundation’s Beyond the Label Resource Fair! 💜 The event brought together families, educators, and community organizations to connect, share resources, and support diverse learners throughout our community. We loved having the opportunity to talk with families about dyslexia and language based learning differences and to connect with so many others doing important work for students. A big thank you to the A’ja Wilson Foundation for inviting Sandhills to be part of such a special event! 🌟

Ahoy, mateys! 🏴‍☠️ Today may be Talk Like a Pirate Day, but our Bucks celebrated a little early with our annual Big & Little Buddy Reveal Party! 💜 Students dressed in their best beach and pirate gear 🏖️ and spent the morning getting to know their buddies and kicking off one of our favorite Sandhills traditions. A big thank you to our Parent Council for putting together such a fun day for our kids! 🦌
