Writers on Writing: “Mr. Vidal was asked if he felt there had ever been an age in recent history that could boast so few good writers as the present. ‘There are as many good writers as ever there were,’ he replied, and I wish I could reproduce on the page the trademark patrician Gore-drawl that transforms his lightest remark into a marmoreal epigram. ‘The problem is that there are so few good readers.’” Stephen Fry

“That’s another thing: my brain hasn’t felt right since I got here. I have no idea what’s going on. I get angry, beat on walls, kick over trash cans. Little things that never irked me before are now a big deal, make me livid. Maybe she’s right, maybe guys have conflict on the brain. Sometimes I feel as if I’d like to punch a random dude, or pay someone to beat the living snot out of me.” From Absolutely Eleventh Avenue, a short story by Richard L. Keller in the winter 2026 issue of LPR.

Writers on Writing: “When we were young, we were told that poetry is about voice, about finding a voice and speaking with this voice, but the older I get I think it’s not about voice, it’s about listening and the art of listening, listening with attention. I don’t just mean with the ear; bringing the quality of attention to the world. The writers I like best are those who attend.”
Kathleen Jamie

Fine Openers: “On one hand, my dad worked the farm from dark until dark for a soft-voiced man wearing white pants and boat shoes, and in exchange we were allowed to live on the estate in the staff ’s cottage (plus a little on top so my dad could buy us Hamburger Helper and Kool-aid), but even five dollars for a field trip sent him screaming and stomping and shoving the kitchen chairs around.

“On the other, you couldn’t say he was an animal, but you couldn’t say he wasn’t either, and the farm kept him free-range and cage-free. When he came in the house, it was obvious he should go back out there and make himself whole with the breeze and the dirt and the rain.”
From “The Beast’s Bracket” by Beaumont Sugar

“Once we were roommates, the daily stuff erased the magic. How could I fantasize with him when he was always there? I quit lifting weights, and he bugged me to work out with him again, as if we could go backwards, quit arguing about groceries and utility bills. Then Chantal arrived.” A few lines from "Skeleton Doll," a short story by Amy Halloran in the winter 2026 issue of LPR.
