We’re almost at the end of Women’s History Month 😞. Today’s Woman in History: Faith Ringgold🌻

Faith Ringgold — born in Harlem in October of 1930 — was an American painter, author, mixed media sculptor, and activist. She’s probably best known for her narrative quilts, portraying themes of Black life and culture.

In her schooling, Ringgold experienced a lot of racism and sexism, which likely influenced her to create and use her art to fight against systems that marginalized and oppressed her.

Another Amazing Woman Artist in our History.
This Time: Augusta Savage🌟👩🏾‍🏫

Augusta Savage was born in Florida in February of 1892. Being a leap year baby, there was no doubt she’d grow to create something incredible.

Savage was a sculptor during the Harlem Renaissance. She started early, sculpting little animals out of clay, and progressed to portrait busts.
Savage established the Savage Studio of Arts and Crafts in Harlem, and became an influential teacher. Through her studio, she inspired a generation of black artists such as: Jacob Lawrence, Norman Lewis, and Gwendolyn Knight.

Highlighting more very special women this month…

This time: Amy Sherald!! 🎨

Amy Sherald was born in Georgia in 1973. The issues of race growing up in the American south would come to influence her art.

Sherald’s focus is painting. Before, her works were strongly autobiographical. Later, she shifted her attention to content offering an important view of African American cultural history and bodies. She uses gray-scale skin tones to challenge the concept of color as race.
