South Carolina Bar Young Lawyers Division

South Carolina Bar Young Lawyers Division The YLD includes members of the SC Bar under age 36 and those with less than five years membership.

The Young Lawyers Division (YLD) is a dynamic community and professional service organization of the South Carolina Bar, specifically created for new lawyers who are in good standing under 36 years of age, or those admitted to the South Carolina Bar as their first bar for less than five years. The YLD coordinates pro bono, community and general legal services. It is a great opportunity for young l

awyers to participate in the American Bar Association as well as assist the South Carolina Bar in carrying out its goals. The YLD serves as an excellent public relations tool for the profession providing a mechanism through which young lawyers fulfill their public service goals.

As we wrap up, our young lawyers across the state have been in schools today, engaging students with presentations on civics and the Constitution. As Constitution Day continues, we’re highlighting the amendment process! Did you know the two-step process begins when an amendment is proposed by Congress and then ratified by state legislatures? Amendments can also be proposed at a national convention or ratified at a state convention, though none of the current amendments have followed this route.

In September 1789, 12 amendments were proposed to protect the most basic rights of U.S. citizens. Of these, 10 were ratified and became the Bill of Rights, with the final amendment ratified over 200 years later in 1992.

Today we celebrate Constitution Day! On September 17, 1787, the Constitutional Convention concluded in Philadelphia and just 11 days later, the U.S. Constitution was adopted. This document is essential to the legal profession, outlining the rights we protect and the limits of governmental power.

Our Young Lawyers Division is making a difference today by going into schools to educate students about the significance of the Constitution and its role in shaping our legal system. Follow the SC Bar for more insights throughout the day! ⚖️
