Our Founder/Executive Director
Shandreka Jones was born in the New York and spent most of her childhood being raised in its foster care system. During her time in the system she endured years of pain and suffering in the homes of foster families. Her account of this treatment is documented in her memoir Butterfly in the Attic - My Story of Abandonment and Abuse in Foster Care. Mrs. Jones joined the military right after high school to escape her circumstances and served her country for 12 years. She knows firsthand what foster youth face while they are in the system and the lack of support and resources when they age out so she decided to position herself to do what she always wanted to do, help foster youth. She attended University of South Carolina and earned her master degree in Social Work in 2016 and in 2017 she became a Licensed Social Worker. She then decided to establish the Butterfly's Den organization which was inspired by her book. She believes that providing support, resources and building a safety net for foster youth in our community will inspire them to be successful.
